A full-bodied, oak-aged Chardonnay needs room to unfold, and that is exactly what this glass gives it. The broad, wing-shaped bowl lets the creamy, buttery notes open up as you pour.
The Expert's Description
Riedel Winewings Chardonnay 1234/97 is a machine-blown white wine glass from the Austrian glassmaker Riedel, shaped with a broad, wing-like bowl engineered for full-bodied, often oak-aged grapes such as Chardonnay.
Riedel has been making glass since 1756, and the family business is now run by its 11th generation of glassmakers and designers. Winewings glasses are stretched outward instead of upward, giving a markedly larger surface than a traditional white wine glass. For a full-bodied Chardonnay, that means both the fruit and the buttery, toasted notes from oak ageing get more room to unfold.
Design & Material
The glass is made from clear crystal glass with no tint. The wide, wing-shaped bowl is the signature feature, giving the aromas plenty of room, while the slender stem keeps your hand away from the bowl so the wine stays cool for longer.
Use & Recommendation
The glass suits full-bodied white wines such as oak-aged Chardonnay, where fruit, acidity and the toasted notes from the oak all need to come through. Serve the wine lightly chilled, not ice cold, so the full aromas are not shut down. The glass is dishwasher safe on a gentle cycle.
