Fary Lochan Whisky
| In the heart of the Danish countryside, malted barley is smoked over fresh stinging nettles – a method no other distillery in the world uses. Fary Lochan proves Danish whisky can have a truly distinctive voice of its own. |
About Fary Lochan
Fary Lochan Distillery sits in Farre near Give, in the middle of the Danish countryside, and is one of the family-owned distilleries that has helped put Danish whisky on the world map. What truly sets Fary Lochan apart is how it smokes its malted barley – the distillery is the only one in the world that smokes its malt over fresh stinging nettles, giving the whisky a flavour found nowhere else. For beginners, that means an entirely new taste experience beyond classic peat smoke, while collectors appreciate that the distillery also makes gin, snaps and liqueur, including a blackcurrant liqueur that won the People's Choice Award in 2023.
History & background
The first cask was filled and laid down for maturation in the cellar at Fary Lochan back in 2009, after which the distillery gradually built a solid reputation both in Denmark and abroad. The stills are specially designed in Scotland following Scottish tradition, but it's the Danish ingredients and the unique nettle-smoking that give the whisky its distinctly Danish signature. Over the years, the distillery has won a number of awards for its releases, both for the whisky and for the other products in its range.
Production & style
Fary Lochan produces its whisky in Scottish-designed stills, but the crucial difference lies in how the malt is smoked – over fresh stinging nettles instead of the peat usually associated with smoky whisky. The result is a whisky where the smoke is more herbal and green than the classic, medicinal peat smoke from Scotland.
Signature style
Herbal, lightly smoked, Danish
A green, almost peppery smoke note from the nettles meets malt and light sweetness – a distinct Danish style unlike any other whisky in the world.
