Denmark's best whisky comes from Farre in Central Jutland near Give
On Saturday, September 28, a new Danish whisky was released from Fary Lochan in Farre. The distillery celebrated with a grand opening and opened the sale of Danish quality whisky.
Official opening at the distillery
A grand opening of Fary Lochan as a whisky producer was planned, even though the distillery has been in operation for almost four years. It took place on Saturday, September 28 from 13:00 to 15:00.
- "We lean on Scottish traditions and it is a must that the distilled liquid is aged for more than three years in oak casks. A whisky from Fary Lochan takes the time it takes, so it is only now that we can call our noble drink whisky, says founder Jens-Erik Jørgensen.
Fary Lochan marked the occasion with speeches by the mayor of the city and Ian Millar from Glenfiddich, all of which were expertly directed by Freddy Blak, who was the master of ceremonies. There was also delicious food and music in the buildings in Farre, which are located so that they blend beautifully with the creek, lake and surrounding forest.
Denmark's best whisky
Several experts have tasted all the whiskies produced in Denmark to date and have given them scores from 0 to 100. Fary Lochan's whisky gets the highest score, even though several have received international medals
- "We are of course very happy that the experts like our whisky. Now it's everyone else's turn to taste what we ourselves call whisky from the very highest quality drawer," Jens-Erik elaborates.
Auction of the very first bottle
On the opening day, bottle no. 000 was put up for sale at an auction, where the highest bid reached no less than DKK 10,000 after a tough battle. "The entire sales price goes towards establishing a new playground for the children in Farre," says Jens-Erik.
A magnificent achievement
- It takes dedicated and passionate work to produce proper whisky, and it is therefore with great joy and pride that we can release the first bottles of whisky, Jens-Erik continues.
And the circumstances for whisky production in Farre have required patience:
- It is difficult to be an entrepreneur in the countryside and even more difficult to succeed. And when we're talking about starting a Danish whisky distillery with 100% focus on Scottish values and quality, it requires even more preparation and perseverance," Jens-Erik concludes.
About Fary Lochan:
FARY LOCHAN DESTILLERIET was founded on December 18, 2009. The distillery is owned by FARY LOCHAN DESTILLERI A/S and is located in the small village of Farre, where the air is always fresh, the ground is clean and the people are friendly. As the founder of the distillery, Jens-Erik Jørgensen has set a course that will be followed from start to finish! The vision is that both the production and the finished product are unique. Jens-Erik does not compromise, and the whisky he produces must be sought after for its high quality.
History
FARY LOCHAN THE DISTILLERY is located in the heart of Jutland. The distillery had to be located in a place where the whisky would have the optimal conditions for its development - out in the open countryside close to forests and streams. This location was found in Farre - a small village in the middle of the Jutland moors. People have lived in Farre for over 2000 years. In 1475, the town was called Fary, which means "the mound at the ford over Omme Å". It is precisely here at the ford that FARY LOCHAN is located. Strategically and historically the right place.
Whisky
Jens-Erik does not produce whisky in large quantities, which limits the annual release of bottles. The annual production will be around 3,000 bottles. Fary Lochan's single malt whisky is only produced in original Scottish pot stills. The first whisky will see the light of day in 2013. Before the release of each year's production from FARY LOCHAN, the distillery's 'taste panel' will have carefully assessed the final result. Only the best whisky will be allowed to leave the distillery. The taste will be on the round and smooth side. The first whisky is a series of four, which will be released at 9-month intervals, so over 3 years "the 4 seasons" will be released.
Background
The preparations for FARY LOCHAN have been long, and virtually every aspect has been examined and assessed down to the smallest detail. From the start, it has been important to Jens-Erik that everything has been thoroughly worked through and tested. It therefore took more than four years for his initial ideas and thoughts to become a concrete result. The copper kettles used in production are original from Scotland. They were ordered in spring 2009 and installed later in the year. Subsequently, the entire production facility has been tested and fine-tuned again and again so that the quality of the upcoming whisky will be at the desired level. It has always been very important for Jens-Erik not to compromise at any point in the process. Equipment as well as raw materials must be top notch. Only with the best raw materials and the best equipment can the whisky achieve the desired result. His prerequisites as a "still manager" were initially little more than a great interest and deep respect for good whisky. It was his overriding hobby - it still is! Since then, he has been on many inspection trips to Scotland, Germany and Austria to visit as many distilleries as possible and to talk to the experts who know the most about whisky and whisky production in the world. In addition, he has done countless studies in books and online. In practical terms, he has gone through a large number of grain, malt, fermentation and distillation trials to find the right amount and process. You never stop learning - it's a lifelong learning experience.
Production
A small amount of malt is used in production, but the majority of the malt is original whisky malt, which helps to ensure the quality of the whisky. The pure and mineral-rich water used in whisky production comes from the spring under Farre town. At FARY LOCHAN THE DISTILLERY, all production is handmade and Fary Lochan's single malt whisky is neither colored nor cold filtered. Our warehouse is located under the distillery, both for the safety of the whisky, but also for slow maturation, which Jens-Erik believes gives the whisky its true flavor. Again, it is important not to compromise!
Ownership
FARY LOCHAN DESTILLERIET A/S owns the entire production facility and production. During 2010, shares were offered in the company. The shareholders are pioneers in Danish whisky. They are part of a project that has not been tried before. They are co-owners of their own distillery - the first 100% newly built whisky distillery in Denmark and the only one with original Scottish copper stills.
The surroundings
The distillery is the smallest distillery in Denmark and probably the smallest in the world. In addition, the distillery has the most beautiful location imaginable, built in harmony with nature. The buildings blend beautifully with the stream, the lake and the surrounding forest.
