Von Oosten Bitter

A Danish recipe from 1899 is still alive and well, tucked into a small bottle tasting of orange, cinnamon and clove. Von Oosten is the bitters that belonged at the breakfast table just as naturally as in a hunter's flask. This is Danish modesty, distilled down into something sharp and full of character.

  • Dark bottle of Danish bitter with a classic yellowish label
    Item no.: 22227865479-10230

A bitter that outlived its own homeland. When production in Hamburg shut down for good, Denmark became the only place in the world still distilling the original recipe.

    Expert's description

Von Oosten is a Danish bitter at 36% ABV, bottled at 70 cl, following a recipe that arrived in Denmark in 1899.

The bitter was created by Simon Levy van Oosten, born in 1799 in Holland, who in 1841 moved himself and production to Hamburg, changing his name from the Dutch "van" to the German "von" along the way. The bitter was imported in barrels from Hamburg to Denmark at the end of the 19th century and traded by wine and spirits wholesaler Emanuel Moller & Co in Copenhagen. On 9 October 1908, Emanuel Moller & Co, together with Marinus Moller & Co, bought the rights to the name and production for Denmark from merchant Eduard Zaun in Hamburg. When production in Hamburg ceased during the Second World War and was never resumed, Denmark became the only country still making the original Von Oosten Bitter today.

Back in 1867, Von Oosten was advertised in the Danish newspaper Næstved Tidende as a remedy for "cholera and stomach trouble" - a claim that wouldn't survive a modern label, but one that shows how long the bitter has held a place in Danish cupboards.

About Von Oosten

Von Oosten Bitter is a Danish bitters, made according to an 1899 recipe with flavours of orange, cinnamon and clove. For the newcomer it's an accessible entry into the Danish bitters tradition, lovely with morning coffee or as a digestif; for the history-minded, the 1899 recipe is interesting because it represents an era when spiced bitters drinks were often seen as much as home remedy as as a treat.

History & Background

Von Oosten Bitter is built on a Danish recipe from 1899, a period when spiced bitters drinks were widespread in Denmark, often used both as a digestif and as a kind of household medicine against indigestion. The tradition of drinking a bitters with breakfast or on hunting trips has deep roots in Danish rural culture, where the warm spices - orange, cinnamon and clove - both tasted good and were said to help digestion after heavy meals. Von Oosten has held on to the original recipe for more than a century and is today regarded as one of the most authentic Danish bitters.

Production & Style

The liqueur is made by giving neutral spirit the flavor and color of violets, resulting in a characteristic floral sweetness.
