History & Background

Absinthe flourished in France in the late 1800s but was banned in 1915 following a campaign that accused the drink of causing insanity and crime, a claim later scientifically discredited. Grandes Distilleries Peureux has roots dating back to this era and resumed production once the absinthe ban was gradually lifted in France and the rest of Europe from the late 1990s onward. The distillery has since worked to recreate the original, artisanal style that made absinthe the drink of choice in Belle Époque Paris.
