The Art of Smoke

Smoke isn't just a tasting note here, it's the whole story. The Art of Smoke gathers some of Islay's most intensely peated whiskies under one name for those who love their dram with a bonfire in the background.

  • Caol Ila 12 Single Islay Malt Whisky
    Item no.: 22227865462

A moderately smoky classic from the sound that gives the distillery its name.

    Expert description

Caol Ila 12 Year Old Single Islay Malt Whisky is the distillery's official age-stated core expression, matured for at least 12 years, bottled at 43%. Caol Ila Distillery was founded in 1846 on the shore of the Sound of Islay, from which the distillery also takes its name — Gaelic for 'Sound of Islay'. The distillery is today owned by Diageo and is one of Islay's largest producers, although much of its output has traditionally gone into blended whisky such as Johnnie Walker. Despite its peated character, Caol Ila is often somewhat lighter and more elegant than several of Islay's other distilleries.

The nose is smoky with sea breeze, citrus and a hint of grain.

About The Art of Smoke

The Art of Smoke is a series centred on Islay's most smoke-driven whiskies, with Lagavulin and Caol Ila as key reference points for the style. For newcomers the series is a natural gateway into the heavy, medicinal smoke style Islay is famous for; for connoisseurs it's a quick way to compare several of the island's iconic smoke profiles side by side.

History & background

Islay's peated whisky style stems from the island's historic use of local peat as fuel to dry the sprouting grain, a practical necessity that later became the island's trademark. The Art of Smoke builds on this legacy by gathering releases referencing names like Lagavulin and Caol Ila under one umbrella. We have only limited specific documentation of the series' exact origin and bottler, so details are kept deliberately general.

Production & style

The whisky is distilled at various peated distilleries and then selected cask by cask with a focus on a pronounced smoky character.

Signature style

Peated, Smoky, Intense
The flavor offers an intense, peated character with pronounced smoke as a recurring theme.

Although the name suggests Islay, The Art of Smoke also sources casks from smoky whiskies outside the island, as peated malt is increasingly produced in several parts of Scotland.
