Varner Wines

Jim and Bob Varner aren't just business partners, they're twins, and their shared obsession is cool-climate, mineral-driven wines in the Burgundian style. During his oenology training, Jim fell for the white and red wines of Burgundy and decided he needed to find somewhere cooler than sun-baked Napa Valley to make the dream real. The result is some of California's most terroir-driven, uncompromising wines.

About Varner

Varner Wines is owned and run by twin brothers Jim and Bob Varner. During his oenology training in the 1970s, Jim became fascinated with the white and red wines of Burgundy during regular tastings, and he knew that when the time came to make his own dream wines, he would need a cooler spot than sun-drenched Napa Valley. For collectors, Varner is one of the rarer names in cool-climate Californian wine, while newcomers can use the brothers' story as an easy entry point into the difference between warm- and cool-climate American wine styles.

History & Background

After finishing his oenology training, Jim worked at Souverain in Napa Valley, but always knew it wasn't the right place for the wines he dreamed of making. Together with his brother Bob, he eventually found the cool, high-elevation sites of the Santa Cruz Mountains, where the Pacific sea breeze keeps temperatures down, almost like in Burgundy. There the brothers founded their own winery, built on a shared conviction that great wine is about place and patience rather than sunshine and volume.

Production & Style

The grapes grow in the region's cool, high-altitude terrain, giving the wines a fresh acidity and an elegant structure.

Signature Style

Fresh, Elegant, Mineral
The wine offers a fresh, elegant character with a mineral finish.
