Crus Bourgeois

Crus Bourgeois isn’t the name of a single château, but an entire classification covering several hundred Bordeaux estates in the Médoc, which since 1932 has given well-run wine houses outside the top elite a recognized mark of quality. This is often where some of Bordeaux’s best values are found, wines with classic structure and character at prices far below the classified 1855 names. For the curious wine drinker, it’s one of the most natural places to start a Bordeaux journey.

About Crus Bourgeois

Crus Bourgeois is an official classification for selected château estates in the Médoc area of Bordeaux, rather than a single wine house.

History & Background

Crus Bourgeois is not a single château but an official classification for selected estates in the Médoc area of Bordeaux, originally established in 1932 as a counterpart to the narrower 1855 classification. The classification has undergone several reforms over the years, including a major restructuring in the 2010s, when quality requirements were tightened and an annual assessment introduced. The purpose has always been to give well-run château estates outside the top elite a recognized quality mark. Today the classification cövers several hundred estates across three quality tiers.

Production & Style

Estates within the classification typically grow Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and craft their wines with a focus on classic Bordeaux style.

Signature Style

Structured, Fruity, Oak-Influenced
The wines vary by estate, but build on a structured, classic Bordeaux profile.
