The rum is produced by Enghaven Rum Distillery, the Danish small batch distillery near Randers, from molasses distilled in both pot and column stills. For Batch 2, casks were carefully selected for the blend, after which additional molasses is added to give the rum its characteristic dark sweetness. The name Black Strap refers to the dark, heavy molasses that is a central part of the recipe.

The result is a deep, sherry-driven rum, where spiced honey meets a hint of smoke.

Fjord Rom 8 Years is a Danish Molasses Rum, distilled in 2018 and bottled eight years later in 2026 at Brænderiet Enghaven, at 48% ABV.

The rum is the third bottle in the Fjord series, an exclusive trio created for Whisky.dk as a tribute to the small ferry Ragna and the route between Mellerup and Voer on the north side of Randers Fjord. Enghaven was founded in 2007 by Esben Moestrup, Erik Moestrup and Mikkel Nordkvist on the family farm the Moestrup family has run since 1881, and since then the range has grown from fruit brandy to also include rum, gin, vodka and whisky. Fjord Rom is built on molasses and has been given eight years to find its depth and warmth. Only 19 bottles of this batch were filled.

As part of the experimental Skunk series, Spotted Skunk represents an independent batch with its own fermentation and distillation profile, distinct from the house's other Skunk releases. Where the original Skunk emphasises ripe banana and caramel, Spotted Skunk takes a more berry and pineapple-forward path with a pronounced spicy undertone.

Where the other Skunk releases draw clearly on the powerful Jamaican style, Striped Skunk takes a different direction with notes more reminiscent of Mediterranean herb fields than Caribbean tropical fruit. The long fermentation period on the custom yeast gives the rum a mildness of acidity and alcohol that's unusual at this high strength, making it well suited to fresh drinks like a mojito.

The result is an aromatic, herbaceous rum, where mint and Italian culinary herbs take centre stage.

A Clean Spirit, founded by Bintu Singh in 2020, builds its entire range around sustainability: the organic molasses is Fair Trade certified, the yeast is organic, and the bottles are made from recycled glass with a glue-free cork. The long fermentation process, inspired by Jamaican tradition, gives the rum an unusual power and aromatic intensity, even though it's not cask aged.

The result is a powerful, unrefined rum with pronounced fruit and an unmistakable ester character.

Kolding is a long way from the Caribbean. Copper pot stills run there anyway, in a building on Nordager, where the new spirit goes into cask and sits through Danish weather year after year. Here in 5 cl, just enough to work out whether Danish rum is for you.

The expert's description

Trolden Miniature Stokers Copper No 3 Distilled Danish Rum 5 cl 40% is a Danish Rum distilled in a copper pot still, matured in American oak casks and bottled at 40%.

The distillery shares its address and its building with Trolden Bryghus in Kolding, and spirit has been made on the site since 2011. The stills are hand-beaten pot stills holding only 350 litres, and those small runs are a large part of why the distillate turns out so round and almost oily in the mouth.

The new spirit goes into American oak and rests for several years before bottling. Cask sizes range from tiny eight litre barrels up to standard 200 litre casks, and the smaller ones give far more wood contact per litre. The result is a golden rum with clear vanilla and caramel, shaped by a short, cool Danish maturation season.

No. 3 is a small batch release. It is neither chill filtered nor coloured, so what you see in the glass came from the cask alone. This bottling is a 5 cl miniature, the easiest way to try a Danish rum before committing to a full bottle.

Tasting notes

Nose

Vanilla and pale caramel, soft and close to dessert. A trace of dry oak and a hint of cocoa sit behind it.

Palate

Round and oily in the mouth. Vanilla sweetness lands first, then caramel, and halfway through a note of chocolate and liquorice appears. The push is gentle and the alcohol stays in the background.

Finish

Short to medium and warm. Liquorice hangs on as the sweetness pulls back, and the oak closes with a dry note.

Eight kilometres from Trolden Distillery in Kolding lies the Lindely vineyard, where grapes are frozen to make a Danish ice wine called Nattefrost, and it is the emptied Nattefrost casks that give this rum its name.

Trolden The Stokers Rum Lindely Nattefrost Edition is a Danish Rum finished in ice wine casks, bottled at 58%.

The rum comes from Trolden Destilleri & Bryghus in Kolding, where its own molasses-based rum was filled into casks that previously held Lindely vineyard's Nattefrost, a Danish ice wine made from grapes that are picked and pressed, then frozen for four weeks and slowly thawed to concentrate their sweetness. After two years of ageing in bourbon casks, the rum spent a further year in these ice wine casks, adding a sweet, fruity dimension on top of the powerful, molasses-driven base character. The range is named The Stokers, a nod to the fire-tenders who traditionally kept the distillation process running.

The result is a powerful yet sweet-toned rum, where molasses and oak meet a fruity, almost wine-like finish from the ice wine casks.
