  A toast at the changing of the guard has become a fixed tradition at Amalienborg - and behind that tradition stands a bottle from one of Porto's oldest houses. This Reserve was created for that very occasion, but works just as well on the sofa at home.

  Expert's Description

  Warre's Royal Guards' Finest Reserve is a Portuguese Reserve Tawny Port from the Douro Valley, aged in oak casks and bottled at 20%.

  The Port is made from selected grapes from Warre's own vineyards in Pinhão and the Rio Torto valley, where only the most fruit-driven and full-bodied casks are chosen for this particular Reserve. It's then matured for at least three years in oak casks in Vila Nova de Gaia before blending and bottling.

  The name comes from a tradition within the Danish Royal Life Guards, where the outgoing commander of the guard traditionally welcomes his successor with a glass of Warre's Port. Warre's was awarded the title of Royal Court Supplier in 1960, and the house has supplied Port to the British and wider European market since 1670 as the oldest British Port house in Portugal.

  The nose offers ripe plum and cherry, with a touch of spice and a light brownish, tawny-like tone.

  Warre's Otima 10 Years is a Portuguese age-declared Tawny Port from the Douro Valley, aged in oak casks and bottled at 20%.

  Fermentation is stopped by adding grape spirit, after which the Port matures in smaller oak casks for an average of ten years. This gives a lighter, more delicate style than the older 20-year version, with a focus on fresh fruit rather than heavy spice.

  Warre's is the oldest British Port house in Portugal, founded in 1670, and has been owned by the Symington family since 1908. The Otima range was developed as a modern take on Tawny, designed to be kept in the fridge and served chilled - an approach that sets it apart from traditional Port served at room temperature.

  Warre's was founded in 1670 and is the oldest British Port house in Portugal - likely the oldest British-owned company in continental Europe. Since 1905 the Symington family has been linked to the house, and from 1908 Warre's was fully owned by the Symingtons, who still run it today.
