Planteray Rum

From sugarcane fields across the Caribbean to French cellars — Planteray brings together some of the region's most diverse rum traditions under one roof, with a touch of French finesse. Every bottle makes a double journey: first tropical aging in its home country, then a final polish in the cognac house's own oak casks. The result is a rum that tastes of two continents at once.

  • Planteray Grande Anejo Guatemala Belize Rum 42%
    Item no.: 222127865377-589

The rum starts out in Guatemala and Belize, where heat and humidity make casks work fast. Then it boards a ship for south-west France and Maison Ferrand's cellars, where Cognac is usually the guest of honour. Here it gets one more chapter.

    Expert's Description

Planteray Gran Añejo Guatemala & Belize is a blended Rum from Guatemala and Belize, aged in bourbon casks, finished in Cognac casks in France and bottled at 42%.

You may know it as Plantation Gran Añejo. Maison Ferrand changed the brand name to Planteray in 2024. This Guatemala and Belize version has been around since 2015 and is the house's Central American Signature Blend.

It's made from molasses, fermented for four days and distilled in column stills. According to the producer, the Guatemalan part comes from a four-column still and the Belizean part from a two-column one.

The first ageing takes place in bourbon casks in a tropical climate, where rum matures quickly and picks up vanilla and coconut. It then travels by ship to France and rests further in Ferrand oak casks that have held Cognac, overseen by the house's Master Blender. Planteray calls this double ageing. The cooler climate slows things down and rounds off the edges, and the Cognac casks add plums, dried fruit and a discreet oak.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Round and slightly Sherry-like, with roasted spices in the background. Vanilla, ripe pear and green apple step forward over time, along with a touch of coconut.

    Palate

Full and well structured. Caramel sauce, baked apples and molasses, with hints of old port and dark dried fruit such as plums.

    Finish

A distinct finish of Virginia tobacco, liquorice and sweet oak.

  • Planteray Stiggins Fancy Pineapple Rum Barbados Jamaica Spirit Drink 40%
    Item no.: 2211377-212563

In 1830s London there was a drink most people have since forgotten: a sweet, pineapple-scented rum that passed as a mark of good taste among the city's gentlemen. Charles Dickens wrote it into literary history when he had the hypocritical Reverend Stiggins enjoy it in secret at Mrs. Weller's pub. Nearly two centuries later, Planteray dug the old recipe back out of history's drawer.

    Expert description

Planteray Stiggins' Fancy Pineapple Rum is a Flavoured Rum from Barbados and Jamaica, bottled at 40%.

In 2015, master blender Alexandre Gabriel teamed up with spirits historian David Wondrich to bring the drink back to life, originally as a thank-you gift for the bartenders at Tales of the Cocktail in New Orleans. The pair dug through old sources such as the 1824 Journal of Patents and Inventions and the 1844 Journal of the Agricultural Society to work out what pineapple rum actually tasted like back then.

Ripe Victoria pineapple flesh is steeped in Planteray Original Dark Rum for several months, while the rind – where the fruit's essential oils are concentrated – is macerated separately and then redistilled through Planteray 3 Stars white rum. The two parts are finally blended together and left to rest further in cask before bottling. The rum won Best New Spirit at Tales of the Cocktail in 2016 and has since become a fixture in Planteray's range – no age statement, but a clear signature of tropical fruit and spice.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Dried pineapple and grilled peach meet overripe banana and caramelised sugar, with a hint of clove, cinnamon and black pepper in the background.

    Palate

Grilled pineapple and flambéed peach unfold alongside tangerine and scorched brown sugar, spiced with clove, cinnamon and black pepper.

    Finish

Caramel and grilled pineapple fade into warm cinnamon and a lingering, citrusy orange note.

    Item no.: 22227865-55

There's a story that you can taste the sun on Barbados in this bottle. Coconuts are cut open and left to dry under the Caribbean sun before they're allowed to steep, on their own terms, in good Barbadian rum – no shortcuts, no bottled essence.

    The Expert's Description

Planteray Cut & Dry Coconut is a Barbados Coconut Rum infused with hand-cut, sun-dried coconut and bottled at 40%.

The bottle also marks something bigger: it was one of the first releases under the new Planteray name, launched in early 2024 when the brand retired the old Plantation name. Behind the recipe sit four years of experimentation at Maison Ferrand under master blender Alexandre Gabriel, who set out to build a coconut rum without artificial flavouring – a real-ingredient answer to Malibu rather than a syrup-based one.

The coconuts are grown by local farmers on Barbados and cut open by hand before drying in the sun to concentrate their flavour. The dried pieces are then infused in a blend of column and pot still rum from Stade's West Indies Rum Distillery, and the infusion is finally blended with Barbados rum aged up to three years. One whole coconut goes into every litre of rum in the bottle – no added coconut essence, no shortcuts.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Coconut and vanilla pod meet butterscotch, cinnamon and a touch of sesame oil.

    Palate

Rich and oily in texture, with coconut milk, ripe banana, green ginger and a base note of dark molasses.

    Finish

  • Planteray Mister Fogg Navy Rum bottle
    Item no.: 22255-1557

Named after a British navy veteran who later became a historian of Navy rum, Mister Fogg honours a bygone era when navy rum was a fixed part of sailors' daily lives.

    Expert Description

Planteray Mister Fogg Navy Rum is a Caribbean Rum blending rum from Barbados, Trinidad, Guyana and Jamaica, bottled at 55.7%.

The rum is the result of a multi-year research project led by Planteray master blender Alexandre Gabriel and rum historian Matt Pietrek, who built the blend on the work of navy veteran Michael Fogg. The blend consists of 43% rum from Barbados, 36% from Trinidad, 17% from Guyana and 4% from Jamaica. The rums are first aged in ex-bourbon casks in their respective countries of origin, after which the blend is shipped to south-west France, where it undergoes double ageing in used oak barrels and extensive oxygenation in large, open wooden vats.

The result is a full-bodied, complex rum, where molasses and dark chocolate meet vanilla, dried fruit and spice in a long, powerful finish.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

    Molasses, dark chocolate and spice.

    Palate

Full-bodied and powerful with vanilla, dried fruit and a hint of oak.

From Planteray's Prestige Cellar series comes this cask strength release from Grenada, where a single vintage distillate from 2011 has had 14 years to develop its full character.

    Expert Description

Planteray Rum Grenada 2011 Prestige Cellar 14 Year PING 17 is a Grenada Rum aged for 14 years and bottled at cask strength 58.3%.

The rum is part of Planteray's Prestige Cellar series, which releases single vintage and single origin rums in limited runs under the PING label. Grenada is a lesser-known rum nation compared to Barbados and Jamaica, but produces rum with a distinctive, earthy character that sets it apart from Planteray's more accessible blends.

The result is a powerful, complex rum, where dark fruit and spice meet a long, warm finish shaped by the high strength.

    Item no.: 22227865377-8154

Xaymaca is what the island's first inhabitants called Jamaica, long before it had its current name. Land of wood and water. Molasses ferments here for up to three weeks, and the copper pot stills turn it into a spirit that smells of overripe bananas, varnish and a whiff of diesel. Planteray then lets it rest on both sides of the Atlantic.

    Expert's Description

Planteray Xaymaca Special Dry is a Jamaican Pot Still Rum aged in bourbon casks, finished in Cognac casks and bottled at 43%. It is a blend of 100% pot still rum from two historic Jamaican distilleries, Clarendon and Long Pond, made from molasses with no added sugar. The label states 156 grams of esters per hectolitre of pure alcohol and 312 grams of volatile compounds, and the dosage is zero grams per litre. Those numbers tell most of the story: this sits at the heavy, funky end of rum.

Clarendon supplies spirit from a Vendome pot still, Long Pond from an old John Dore. The back label lists the marks in the blend: EMB and MLC from Clarendon, VRW and STCE from Long Pond. Marks are Jamaica's traditional way of signalling intensity and flavour profile. Fermentation runs between one and three weeks, and that is where the fruity, almost solvent-like notes come from, the ones rum nerds call hogo.

Ageing happens in two stages. First one to three years in bourbon casks in the Jamaican heat, where rum matures fast. Then the rum sails to Maison Ferrand in Cognac and spends roughly another year in Cognac casks. That last step sands down the edges without taking the character, and the result is drier, spicier and more cohesive than a young Jamaican rum usually manages to be. Since 2017, Maison Ferrand has owned a third of National Rums of Jamaica, the company behind Clarendon and Long Pond.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Very complex and slightly meaty, with a touch of smoke and sour, herbal notes that build slowly. Then comes vanilla, almost pastry-like, alongside cooked banana, bitter orange peel and ripe pineapple.

    Palate

Dry and spicy. Rose water, soursop, pear and apricot fill the mouth, followed by coconut milk, allspice, ginger, nuts and something close to fresh-baked bread.

    Finish

Long and dry, with pepper, soft vanilla and a buttery note. A faint smokiness hangs around afterwards.

Grande Reserve is the name that originally put Plantation on the map – a blend of Barbadian rums that still represents the brand's classic approach to double maturation.

    Expert Description

Plantaray Grande Reserve Barbados is a Barbadian Rum blend bottled at 40%.

The rum combines different rums from Barbados, which first mature in bourbon casks in the Caribbean climate and then spend a year in old French oak casks in southwest France. This double maturation creates a first wave of candied tropical fruit that leads into voluptuous bourbon vanilla notes, whose richness is perfectly balanced by fresh fruit and delicate tannins from the second wave of maturation.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Complex and well-balanced notes of ripe tropical fruit and vanilla, evolving into delicate hints of white peach and coconut, with a mellow brown sugar aroma.

    Palate

Exceedingly smooth with plenty of creamy vanilla, hints of toasted marshmallow and vanilla wafers, winding into a long finish tinged with espresso and allspice, while the light sweetness of butterscotch and caramel is followed by sharp orange peel and light baking spices.

    Finish

Round and full-bodied with liquorice-tinged molasses in a long, pleasant conclusion.

    Item no.: 22227865377-216

Three Caribbean "stars" meet in one glass – Barbados, Jamaica and Trinidad each contribute their character to this versatile, clear rum.

    Expert Description

Planteray 3 Stars is a Blended Rum from Barbados, Jamaica and Trinidad, carbon filtered and bottled at 41.7%.

The blend is named after the three "stars" of Caribbean rum production: Barbados and Jamaica contribute unaged rum, while Trinidad contributes a 3-year-old rum, and a 12-year-old Jamaican rum adds depth to the blend. All colour from the ageing process is removed through carbon filtration before bottling, giving the rum its clear, almost water-white appearance. Each island contributes its distinct character to the blend – from the lighter, refined Trinidadian style to the funkier, full-bodied Jamaican rum.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Introduces the three "stars" with ripe banana, tropical fruit, brown sugar and subtle coffee notes.

    Palate

Continues with more fruit, vanilla, orange zest and a touch of hogo with a light viscosity, complemented by faint molasses.

    Finish

Dry finish with a hint of pot still funk.

  • Rum bottle with burgundy label, Plantation Barbados 5 Year
    Item no.: 22227865377-27

Barbados is where rum was born, and the sun on Brighton Beach has spent well over a century working its way into barrels of sugarcane spirit. But the journey doesn't end on the island. The casks cross the Atlantic to the quiet cellars of Cognac, where the rum settles into its final shape. That's the story behind Planteray Barbados Rum 5 Years.

    Expert Description

Planteray Barbados Rum 5 Years is a Barbados Rum matured in bourbon casks and Ex-Ferrand cognac casks and bottled at 40%. The rum comes from the West Indies Rum Distillery, also known as Stade's Rum Distillery, founded in 1893 by George Stade in Blackrock, Barbados. Since 2017 the distillery has been owned by the French cognac house Maison Ferrand, and that link is exactly what sets this bottle apart.

The rum is a blend of both pot still and column still distillate, made from molasses and fermented for 3 to 4 days. The first stage of maturation happens in used bourbon casks under Barbados' tropical sun for roughly 3 years, where the heat pulls colour and character quickly from the wood. The casks then sail to Château de Bonbonnet in France, where the rum spends around 2 more years in casks that previously held Ferrand Cognac. This is the double ageing Planteray is known for, and together it adds up to the 5 years stated on the label. Until 2024 the range was called Plantation Rum, but the brand renamed itself Planteray to move away from the word's colonial associations — the name combines "plant" for the sugarcane and "ray" for the sun that ripens it.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Baked goods and brown sugar meet honey and dark caramel, with a hint of pipe tobacco and toasted marshmallow underneath. Give it a moment and prune and dark raisin start to show too.

    Palate

Bittersweet and toasty, with baked fruit and a faint resinous edge. Midway through it turns almost fruity, like warm apple cake fresh from the oven, carried by a clear oak sweetness.

    Finish

Medium length and chocolatey, with one last trace of spice that lingers well after the sip.

About Planteray

Planteray Rum is a series that insists Caribbean rum isn't one thing, but many – each country, each plantation, its own style. The series is known for its sophisticated, versatile approach, blending traditional Caribbean distillation methods with French ageing craft. For beginners, Planteray is a great introduction to how different rum can taste depending on origin, while collectors appreciate the house's ability to source and showcase unique cask selections from several countries at once.

History & background

Behind Planteray stands Maison Ferrand, a French house founded by Alexandre Gabriel, who has made his name in both cognac and rum. The series was originally launched under the name Plantation, but was renamed Planteray in certain markets following a trademark dispute in the US. Over the years, Gabriel and his team have built their reputation on a passion for preserving authentic Caribbean rum techniques while adding French ageing expertise – a combination that has firmly put Planteray on the world map.

Production & style

The rums in the series are distilled using different traditional methods depending on country of origin – pot stills yield soft, full-bodied, aromatic rums, while column distillation produces lighter, more elegant expressions. Freshly harvested sugarcane is pressed, and the juice gently heated into molasses, which is then fermented for anywhere from 12 hours to several days, depending on the style the distillery is aiming for. A long fermentation gives a fuller, more characterful taste, while a short one gives a softer, lighter profile.

Signature style

Varied, tropical, refined
From soft, caramel-rich pot still rums to light, juicy column-distilled expressions – each bottle reflects its country of origin rather than one unified house style.
