Tormore Whisky

Tormore was the first entirely new distillery built in Scotland in the 20th century, raised between 1958 and 1960 with architecture so striking it resembles a small castle more than a factory. Architect Sir Albert Richardson even designed a golf course and fountains for the workers - a status symbol for an optimistic post-war industry. Now owned by Pernod Ricard, Tormore remains one of Speyside's most visually distinctive distilleries.

Tormore 12-Year-Old Roslin Distillers is a remarkable bottling from the Tormore distillery, located in the heart of the Speyside region in Scotland. This whisky was distilled in 2010 and bottled in 2023, giving it an age of 12 years. It has been matured in a refill bourbon cask and bottled at an impressive cask strength of 63.5% ABV.

On the nose, you are greeted by classic ex-bourbon aromas, dominated by notes of vanilla bean, white grapes, honeydew melon, and a hint of the cask's character. Due to the high alcohol content, there may be a noticeable alcoholic presence, which can be softened with the addition of a little water.

On the palate, initial spicy pastry notes emerge, followed by vanilla. At full strength, the taste can be perceived as intense and spicy, with hints of burnt caramel and unripe stone fruits. Adding a few drops of water brings out notes of lemon zest and rounds off the tasting experience.

The finish of this whisky is long-lasting, with persistent spicy notes. As the intensity fades, tangy lemon notes emerge, while vanilla and spices remain present throughout.

This bottling is known for its precise and clean character, without significant flaws but also without standout peculiarities. It represents a classic Speyside profile with distinct ex-bourbon influences. Due to the high alcohol content, adding water is recommended to unlock the underlying flavor nuances and soften the ethanol bite.

About Tormore

Tormore stands out in the Speyside landscape thanks to its unusually elegant architecture. The distillery was designed with an ambition for beauty far beyond the functional, featuring a clock tower and formal gardens, earning it the nickname 'the most beautiful distillery in Scotland' among several whisky enthusiasts. Behind the elegant facade, Tormore produces a classic, light, and floral Speyside style that has historically found its way mostly into blends, but is increasingly also released as its own single malt for those wanting to experience the distillate undiluted by the blending process.

History & Background

The distillery was built in 1958 by the American company Schenley International with the clear purpose of supplying whisky for their Long John blends. It sits in Cromdale Hills at the heart of Speyside, surrounded by pine forest, overlooking the winding River Spey. Unlike many older distilleries that have grown organically over decades, Tormore was designed from the outset as a single, deliberate whole, something clearly reflected in the style of its buildings.

Production & Style

Tormore uses traditional pot stills and focuses on a light, clean distillation style, producing a floral, easily approachable distillate. That light style makes the whisky well suited to blends, where it contributes finesse rather than power, but the same qualities also make it an accessible entry point for whisky beginners wanting a Speyside without too much heaviness.
