Tamdhu Whisky

Tamdhu is Speyside's sherry master, a distillery that insists on maturing its entire production exclusively in Spanish sherry casks. It's an expensive, time-consuming choice in an industry where most opt for the cheaper bourbon cask, but the result speaks its own rich, dark language.

  • Tamdhu-Glenlivet Cadenhead's Original Collection 12 Year Old bottle
    Item no.: 22225390-7558

Speyside filtered through Cadenhead's uncompromising lens: no added colour, no chill-filtration, just Tamdhu's own spiced, fruit-laden spirit lifted to 46% and left to a refill oloroso cask to finish the story.

    Expert description

Tamdhu-Glenlivet 2013/2025 Cadenhead's Original Collection 12 Year Old is a Single Malt Scotch Whisky, matured in refill oloroso hogsheads and bottled at 46%.

This release belongs to Cadenhead's Original Collection, the series in which Scotland's oldest independent bottler presents single distillery spirit with nothing added and nothing filtered out. The liquid comes from Tamdhu in Knockando, a distillery founded in 1897 and now owned by Ian Macleod Distillers, who have shaped it into one of Speyside's most sherry-driven malts. The "Glenlivet" suffix is an old regional naming tradition from a time when the name signalled quality across Speyside rather than pointing to another distillery.

The whisky spent twelve years in refill oloroso hogsheads, casks that had already given up much of their first sherry punch. That means a more restrained, savoury sherry note, letting Tamdhu's own spiced, fruit-forward character lead rather than being buried under dark sherry. This particular batch was bottled in May 2026 as part of the Original Collection.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Dulce de leche and soft caramel open up alongside a streak of raspberry sorbet and baked pear, sweet and inviting with Speyside fruit right up front.

    Palate

Blueberry and crystallised ginger meet a grainy, almost rye-bread-like note, spicy and savoury with an oily weight that carries the 46% comfortably.

    Finish

Mandarin and vanilla drift into a hint of lemongrass, medium in length and fresh on the way out.

    About the product

The small, clear glass jug with a pipette is designed to dose water drop by drop, so you can add exactly the amount needed to open up a whisky without overdoing it. At around 10 cm tall, it's compact enough to sit next to the glass without taking up much room.

About Tamdhu

Tamdhu is one of the few Scottish distilleries that insists on using only sherry casks for its entire production, a decision markedly more expensive than the far more common use of bourbon casks. That strategy gives Tamdhu a consistent, rich, dark profile that sets it apart from most other Speyside malts, which typically blend several cask types. Historically, Tamdhu has had close ties to both Highland Park and Macallan through its former connection to the Robertson & Baxter/Edrington family, placing the distillery in the company of some of Scotland's most respected sherry-driven whiskies.

History & Background

Tamdhu was founded in 1897 by, among others, Alexander Robertson, one half of Robertson & Baxter, a company that later developed into what we today know as Edrington. That heritage has historically placed Tamdhu in the same family as both Highland Park and Macallan, two of Scotland's most celebrated sherry-matured distilleries. Since its founding, the distillery's main purpose has primarily been supplying blends, but in 2013 Tamdhu was acquired by Ian Macleod Distillers, who have since prioritised single malt releases under the distillery's own name.

Production & Style

What truly defines Tamdhu is its strict cask policy: exclusively European and American oak that has previously held sherry. This produces a consistently deep, dark, and rich distillate, where sherry's influence on both colour and flavour is clear in every single release, without the variation seen at distilleries that blend cask types.

Signature Style

Rich, Sherried, Dark
The flavour is deep and rich with clear sherry character, notes of raisin, orange peel, and spiced wood, a consistently dark profile created by the strict cask policy.
