Asbach Uralt Brandy

Hugo Asbach founded a German brandy tradition in 1892 that later became a key ingredient in the famous Rüdesheimer Kaffee, invented by a TV chef in 1957. In Berlin it's drunk under the nickname 'Futschi', mixed with cola.

  • Bottle of Asbach Original 3 Year Old German brandy with red label
    Item no.: 22227865479-1406

In Rüdesheim am Rhein, where the Rhine winds past steep vineyards, Asbach has distilled brandy since 1892. This 3 year old expression is the house's most accessible release, yet it carries the same craft roots as the older bottlings.

    Expert's Description

Asbach Original 3 Year Old is a German Brandy, matured for at least 3 years, bottled at 38%.

The house of Asbach was founded in 1892 by Hugo Asbach in Rüdesheim am Rhein, and it was the first German distillery to produce brandy following the French model. The Asbach name has since become so closely tied to German brandy that many Germans use it as a generic term for the category.

The brandy is distilled from selected wine and then matured in French Limousin oak casks, which lend spiced warmth and depth even after just a few years on wood.

The short but careful maturation makes this 3 year old edition a more direct and fruit-forward experience than the house's older bottlings, suiting both everyday enjoyment and a first introduction to German brandy.

    Did You Know?

Asbach was the first distillery in Germany allowed to call its spirit brandy at all, because Hugo Asbach insisted on using the French distillation method instead of the cheaper German alternatives common in his day.

  • Bottle of Asbach 8 Year Old German brandy with golden brown label
    Item no.: 22227865479-26

Eight years on oak is a long time for a German brandy, and it shows: Asbach 8 Year Old is a rounder, more contemplative take on the house's classic style, from the same Rüdesheim distillery that set the German brandy standard back in 1892.

    Expert's Description

Asbach 8 Year Old is a German Brandy, matured for up to 8 years, bottled at 40%.

The brandy is produced by the respected Asbach distillery in Rüdesheim am Rhein, known since 1892 for quality brandy made in the French tradition. This 8 year old edition represents a more mature and complex version of the house's core style.

Distilled from wine and matured in small oak casks, the brandy gains a round, full character, while its natural colour and lack of chill-filtration underline an authentic, unadulterated expression.

With a medium body and balanced sweetness, the 8 year old edition appeals to both newcomers and seasoned brandy lovers seeking more depth than the house's younger bottlings.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Apple, apricot and a hint of coconut, supported by red grape.

    Palate

Full and round with a clear presence of oak and a soft, ripe sweetness.

    Finish

    Did You Know?

Asbach 8 Year Old is made without chill-filtration and without added colouring, meaning the bottle's deep colour comes entirely from eight years of contact with the oak cask rather than from caramel colouring, as is common in many other brandies.

  • Small sample bottle of Asbach Uralt Privatbrand German brandy
    Item no.: 22227865479-20175

A small bottle, a big taste. Sometimes the best way to get to know a spirit is not to open a full bottle at all, but to pour out 3 cl and take your time.

    Expert's Description

Sample 3 cl Asbach 8 Year Uralt Privatbrand is a German Brandy from the Asbach distillery, bottled at 40%.

Asbach was founded in 1892 by Hugo Asbach in Rüdesheim am Rhein, and the name is today virtually synonymous with German brandy. When the Treaty of Versailles after the First World War banned the use of the word cognac outside France, it was Hugo Asbach himself who coined the term Weinbrand, which became an official category under German wine law in 1923.

Asbach is double-distilled in copper stills from selected German Rhine wines and then aged in small oak casks, where the spirit slowly gains colour and body. This Uralt Privatbrand edition has aged 8 years, giving it more depth than the house's standard 3-year bottling.

The 3 cl format is meant precisely for getting to know a classic German brandy style without committing to a full bottle.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Ripe grapes and caramel, with a light nutty undertone from the cask.

    Palate

Soft and round, with notes of dried fruit and a mild spice that sets it clearly apart from a French cognac's style.

    Finish

Short to medium, warm and lightly sweet.

About Asbach Brandy

Asbach is the best-known German brandy, distilled using a French-inspired method in the town of Rüdesheim on the Rhine. For newcomers it's a warm, caramel-toned brandy just as good in a cola long drink as neat; for collectors it's notable that Asbach is deeply rooted in the culture and history of its hometown Rüdesheim, including as a fixed ingredient in the iconic Rüdesheimer Kaffee, a flaming coffee drink invented in 1957 that remains a local tourist attraction.

History & Background

Asbach was founded in 1892 by Hugo Asbach in the town of Rüdesheim am Rhein, after he had studied cognac distillation in France and wanted to bring the same level of craftsmanship to Germany. When German law later banned the use of the term 'cognac' for products made outside France, the term 'weinbrand' was coined instead for this type of wine distillate, a category Asbach is still considered Germany's best-known representative of today. The brandy became deeply rooted in the local community around Rüdesheim, notably as the main ingredient in the famous Rüdesheimer Kaffee, invented by a German TV chef in 1957. In Berlin, Asbach is traditionally enjoyed mixed with cola under the affectionate nickname 'Futschi'.

Production & Style

The brandy is distilled from German wine using the classic double distillation method and aged in oak casks for several years.
