Deep in the Black Forest, where fir trees cast long shadows over old distilleries, a clear German winemaking tradition unites with one of the region's oldest distilling crafts. Belsazar Dry is the purest, most ascetic member of this alliance - tight, dry and uncompromising.

    Expert's Description

Belsazar Vermouth Dry Germany is a German Dry Vermouth at 19%, developed by Maximilian Wagner and Sebastian Brack, who founded Belsazar in Berlin in 2013. The name honours Sixtus Balthasar Schladerer, founder of the family-run distillery in Staufen im Breisgau in the Black Forest, which supplies the fruit brandy used in the vermouth.

The base wine comes from the South Baden wine districts of Markgraeflerland and Kaiserstuhl, and instead of neutral spirit, the vermouth is fortified with Schladerer's own fruit brandy. Twenty botanicals, including wormwood, coriander, gentian and orange peel, are infused individually and then matured in stoneware vessels.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Orange-chocolate notes, dried apricot and honey meet white grapes, nectarine zest, cinnamon and chamomile.

    Palate

Dry and lightly bitter with gentian and quinine, supported by wine-like acidity, coriander, bitter orange marmalade, lemon zest and chamomile.

    Finish

The acidity fades alongside gentian and wormwood bitterness, closing with a warming spice note.

In Berlin's creative circles, two friends met the old distilling traditions of the Black Forest, and from that encounter Belsazar was born. The Rosé is the most playful member of the family - bright, floral and filled with summer berries, echoing the South German vineyards the vermouth calls home.

    Expert's Description

Belsazar Vermouth Rose Germany is a German Rosé Vermouth at 17.5%, created by Maximilian Wagner and Sebastian Brack, who founded the brand in Berlin in 2013. The vermouth is named after Sixtus Balthasar Schladerer, founder of the family-run distillery in Staufen im Breisgau in the Black Forest, with whom Belsazar collaborates.

The base wine comes from the South Baden wine districts of Markgraeflerland and Kaiserstuhl and is fortified with Schladerer's own fruit brandy rather than neutral spirit. Twenty different botanicals - including wormwood, star anise, cardamom, coriander and cloves - are infused individually before the vermouth matures in stoneware vessels for up to three months.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

White grape, raspberry and ripe peach unfold alongside soft herbal notes and a hint of orange blossom.

    Palate

A honeyed sweetness is balanced by wine-like acidity, while rose petal, raspberry, pink grapefruit, orange zest and ripe peach emerge with a light touch of clove.

    Finish

The finish brings tannic red grape skin, raspberry and clove, rounded off with black pepper and a light, barky bitterness.

About Belsazar Vermouth

Belsazar is a German vermouth from the Black Forest, known for combining local fruit and alpine herbs with the classic European vermouth tradition. For newcomers it's an aromatic, subtly sweet vermouth just as good neat as in a Negroni; for collectors it's notable that the brandy used to fortify the vermouth comes from the renowned Alfred Schladerer Schwarzwälder Hausbrennerei, while the wine base is mainly Pinot Noir from southern Baden, a combination that quickly made the brand a bartender favourite.

History & Background

Belsazar was founded in 2013 through a collaboration between Maximilian Wagner, Sebastian Brack and Philipp Schladerer of the renowned Alfred Schladerer Schwarzwälder Hausbrennerei. The idea was to create a German vermouth able to match classic French and Italian styles, uniting the Schladerer family's generations of brandy expertise with a wine base primarily of Pinot Noir from southern Baden, spiced with wormwood and select herbs. The brand quickly won hearts among bartenders worldwide for its quality and versatility in cocktails. In 2018 Belsazar was acquired by spirits giant Diageo, marking the start of a new chapter for the German vermouth brand.

Production & Style

Belsazar is made from German wine spiced with Black Forest botanicals, often with the addition of fruit distillates for extra depth.
