Blandy's Madeira Wine

On a volcanic island in the middle of the Atlantic, a young British soldier carved out a new future for himself – not as a military man, but as a winemaker. Blandy's is the story of how love for an island and its grapes became one of the world's most respected Madeira houses.

  • Golden Madeira wine bottle with Duke of Sussex label
    Item no.: 222278565656-78

High under the sun-baked roof tiles of Blandys old wine lodge in Funchal, rows of casks rest and mature for years while the island heat does its slow work. This is where Duke of Sussex takes shape — a dry, nutty Madeira with roots stretching back to 1811.

    Note: Contains sulphites.

    Expert Description

Blandys Duke of Sussex Dry Madeira is a dry fortified wine from Madeira, Portugal, made from the Tinta Negra grape with an alcohol content of 19%.

Blandys has been making Madeira since 1811 and is the only one of the original founding families still both owning and actively running its own house, now in its seventh generation. Duke of Sussex belongs to the house's dry range, named after an English duke from an era when Madeira was a fixture at the British court and on ships crossing the Atlantic.

The wine is aged using the traditional canteiro method, where casks rest in the warm attics of the lodge and mature slowly over years rather than being artificially heated. That gives a more complex, elegant wine than the cheaper estufagem-aged Madeiras, even in this accessible, non-vintage bottling.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Light and fresh, with citrus, toasted almonds and hazelnuts, and a hint of salty minerality behind the classic Madeira bouquet of dried fruit and spice.

    Palate

Dry and precise on the palate, with bright acidity keeping the wine fresh. The nutty character carries through from the nose, joined by hints of apricot and a touch of caramel, without ever tipping into sweetness.

    Finish

A clean, faintly bitter-nutty finish with a tangy edge that makes the wine a natural aperitif.

    Serving & Food Pairing

Serve Duke of Sussex chilled at 11-13°C in a small Madeira or sherry glass. It's built for the aperitif hour, but also works well with smoked fish, tapas and olives, and its dry style can easily stand up to a mild curry.

About Blandys Madeira Wine

Blandy's is one of the most famous Madeira houses, founded in 1811 by British soldier John Blandy, who fell in love with the island and its wine while stationed there. For newcomers, Blandy's is a natural gateway into Madeira's sweet, tangy, oxidative world; for collectors, the house's older Colheita and Frasqueira vintages rank among the most sought-after bottles in the entire fortified wine category, thanks to Madeira's near-limitless shelf life.

History & Background

John Blandy arrived on Madeira as a British soldier in 1807 and became so captivated by the island and its wine that he founded his own trading house in 1811. The family has run the business through five generations since, and today The Madeira Wine Company, of which Blandy's is part, is led by the Symington family, who also own several of Portugal's largest Port houses. The combination of two centuries of experience and modern ownership has made Blandy's a fixed reference point for Madeira wine worldwide.

Production & Style

Blandy's produces Madeira wine from the classic grape varieties Sercial, Verdelho, Bual, and Malmsey, each with its own sweetness level, and uses the traditional estufagem heating method that gives Madeira its characteristic, long-lasting profile.

Signature Style

Oxidative, Nutty, Long-Lasting
The flavor ranges from dry to sweet depending on grape variety, but a characteristic oxidative, nutty complexity runs throughout.
