  Expert description

  Absolut Elyx is a Swedish Vodka distilled from single estate winter wheat in a 1921 copper still and bottled at 42.3%.

  The column is called Column 51 and is built entirely from copper. It is operated manually by a small handful of people, led by Krister Asplund, and every handle, valve and level is set by hand. The copper is not merely construction material. It acts as a catalyst, capturing the heavier compounds in the spirit as it travels, and that accounts for much of the oily mouthfeel.

  The wheat comes from a single estate, Råbelöf in southern Sweden, where wheat has been grown since the 1400s. Dry cold winters and long warm summers suit winter wheat, and the grain carries the starch balance the distillery is looking for. The water is drawn from a local aquifer.

  Tasting notes

  Nose

  Clean and rich. Freshly baked bread and white chocolate sit on top, with a soft layer of cereal and mellow spice underneath.

  Palate

  Macadamia nuts and creamed cereal spread out, followed by white chocolate and buttery bread notes. The texture is thick without being cloying.

  Finish

  Rounded and mildly spiced with a fresh nuttiness. It lingers a long time and closes quietly.

  A pea pulls nitrogen out of the air and leaves the soil better than it found it. That does not sound like something belonging in a vodka bottle. At Arbikie it is nonetheless the entire starting point.

  Expert description

  Arbikie Nadar Vodka is a Scottish Vodka distilled from peas grown at Arbikie Distillery and bottled at 43%.

  Peas are legumes and fix their own nitrogen. They therefore need no synthetic fertiliser, and fertiliser is otherwise one of the heaviest entries in the ledger when grain becomes spirit. The sums end with each 70 cl bottle saving more than 1.53 kg CO2e beyond what it costs to produce.

  Behind the bottle sits five years of doctoral research by distillery master distiller Kirsty Black in partnership with Abertay University. A gin came first, in 2020, and the vodka followed the year after as the first climate positive vodka in the world.

  In flavour terms it is not neutral, and that is deliberate. The peas leave something green and floral that grain vodka never delivers, and 43% gives the spice room to open out.

  Tasting notes

  Nose

  Fresh and floral with crushed white pepper behind it. A green, almost vegetal breath sits underneath the whole thing.

  Palate

  Intense and lively. The spice arrives early and broadly, yet the mouth fills at the same time with a creamy sensation that softens the edges.

  Finish

  Long and distinct. The pepper draws out while the floral note returns right at the end.

  Four thousand kilometres east of Moscow lies a town on the Trans-Siberian railway where the winters are long and the water is drawn from far below the frost line. Spirits have been made there since 1900, and since 2002 some of it has been called Beluga.

  Expert description

  Beluga Noble is a Russian Vodka made from malt spirit at the Mariinsk Distillery in Siberia, bottled at 40%.

  The base is malt spirit rather than the more common plain grain spirits, and that is part of the explanation for the rounder mouthfeel. The spirit is blended with artesian water from deep wells in the Siberian bedrock and then run through a tall column of birch charcoal, which catches the heaviest compounds.

  Then comes the part the house hangs its name on. Small amounts of honey, oat extract and milk thistle extract are added, and the vodka is left to rest for 30 days before it goes into glass. The rest is not cask maturation but a stretch of time in which the components settle down and find one another.

  The result is a vodka deliberately softer and sweeter than the classic dry Eastern European style. It is built to be drunk ice cold and neat alongside salty, rich food — caviar is the house recommendation, and it holds up.

  Tasting notes

  Nose

  Pale honey and wet grain, with a touch of vanilla and something mineral underneath.

  Palate

  Round and almost oily. The malt gives mild sweetness, the oat lays down a creamy film, and only at the end does a dry, herbal edge arrive.

  Finish

  Soft and medium. The sweetness withdraws slowly and leaves a clean, faintly bitter herbal note.

  Berlin keeps wild gardens between its apartment blocks. The elder bush by the railway line, the cornflower in a neglected courtyard, the wild rose climbing a firewall. Berliner Brandstifter collects exactly those flowers and puts them into a vodka.

  Berliner Brandstifter 2016 Vodka is a German Vodka from Berliner Brandstifter, distilled from French sugar beet, refined with Berlin flowers and bottled at 43.3%.

  The house was founded in 2009 by Vincent Honrodt, whose great-grandfather ran a spirits business in Berlin in the early twentieth century. The name translates as arsonist, and it is meant as a joke: in old Berlin slang, an arsonist was also somebody who burned spirit.

  The base is a distillate of selected French sugar beet, five times distilled and seven times filtered. That gives a rare mildness despite the 43.3%, and it leaves a faintly earthy sweetness that grain vodka simply does not have. On top come the flowers: wild rose, elderberry, blackcurrant, violet root and cornflower, all grown and hand-harvested at the Speisegut farm in Berlin.

  The flowers macerate for several weeks and are then distilled individually before the distillates are blended into the base. Each batch rests for some weeks in a 700-litre tank so the aromas can settle, and is then bottled in runs of 999. Label and number go on by hand in Berlin.

  Tasting notes

  Nose

  Floral and fresh. Elderflower arrives first, then blackcurrant leaf and a fine powdered touch of violet root.

  Palate

  Mild despite the strength. A faintly earthy sweetness from the sugar beet carries blackcurrant and rose petal, with a peppery glint at the end.

  Medium and drying. The flowers withdraw slowly and leave a clean, lightly mineral impression.

  Smoke in a glass usually means peat, Islay and a cask that has stood for years. This one arrives from somewhere else entirely: from English oak, from a farm in Herefordshire and from water left sitting in the smoke for five days before it ever met the spirit.

  Chase Smoked Vodka English Oak Limited Edition is an English Vodka from Chase Distillery in Herefordshire, distilled from the farm's own potatoes and bottled at 40%.

  Chase Distillery was founded in 2008 by William Chase. By then he had already built the Tyrrells crisp brand out of his own potato harvest and sold it again, and he chose to stay in the field: the potatoes are grown at Rosemaund Farm, where they are also fermented and distilled. From soil to bottle, all of it happens inside the same fence.

  The smoked version came about by turning the process around. Instead of smoking grain or resting the spirit in a charred cask, the water is smoked over English oak for five days and then blended with the potato vodka. The smoke comes in through the back door, carried by water, which gives it a very different structure from the peat smoke of a Single Malt Whisky.

  It divides people. Some compare it to a reposado tequila or a mild mezcal because of the vegetal sweetness beneath the smoke, and there is something in that. The potatoes lay down a creamy weight for the smoke to rest on, which is why the bottle works best with a couple of ice cubes and nothing else involved.

  Tasting notes

  Nose

  Cold ash and toasted oak first, then a light note of vanilla. Beneath it sits something earthy, close to freshly boiled potatoes.

  Palate

  Creamy and broader than expected. The smoke arrives midway and reads dry rather than sooty, with a mild sweetness and a green, vegetal tone in the background.

  Finish

  Dry and smoky, with good length for a vodka. A touch of pepper turns up at the end as the sweetness falls away.

  Ciroc Pomegranate Limited Edition is a French Vodka built on French wine grapes, infused with natural pomegranate flavour and bottled at 37.5%.

  Beneath the aroma sits the familiar grape spirit from Maison Villevert, distilled four times in column stills and a fifth time in a tailor made copper pot still. Pomegranate is the most acid driven fruit the brand has worked with, and that acidity shows in the glass. The producer describes the profile as juicy red berries with a hint of fresh strawberry, carried by a silky smooth finish.

  The expression belongs to Ciroc's limited releases and has never been part of the standing range. It appears for a while and then disappears again, which separates it from Apple, Coconut, Peach, Pineapple and Mango, the permanent members of the line up. The vodka is gluten free.

  Tasting notes

  Nose

  Sweet, fruity pomegranate right at the front with a darker berry note behind it. There is a light floral edge found only in this expression.

  Palate

  Aurora reached the market in 2016 as the second expression from Crystal Head. Where the original is built on corn, the raw material here is English wheat, and that moves the flavour noticeably. Wheat delivers a tighter, more peppery spirit, while corn pulls towards creamy sweetness. The spirit is blended with Newfoundland water and nothing is added along the way.

  The purity comes from five distillations and seven filtrations. The last three filtrations pass through layers of Herkimer diamonds, the semi-precious quartz crystals the house has used from the start. The bottle gets its metallised surface through a process that lays the colour unevenly across the glass, which is why no two bottles look quite the same.

  Nose

  Crisp and dry. Delicate floral notes sit on top with a discreet breath of anise beneath them.

  Onyx arrived in 2020 as the third expression in the range. The first was built on Canadian corn, the second on English wheat, and here the raw material is agave — the same plant behind Tequila. The agave comes from one single farm, and the spirit is then blended with Newfoundland water like the rest of the family. No oils, no sugars, nothing else added.

  Crystal Head filters through Herkimer diamonds, semi-precious quartz crystals mined in Herkimer County in New York State. Whether the stones do anything chemically is open to argument, but the house has stuck with the method since 2008. What matters with Onyx is that the raw material is not distilled away. The agave sits waiting in the middle of the mouth.

  Nose

  Freshly cut grass and white pepper, with a thread of citrus behind it. Drier and greener than a skull bottle usually promises.

  Palate

  Soft opening with a touch of spice and sweetness, until the agave arrives with its earthy grip. Sweet without ever turning sugary.

  In September 2008 the first pallet stood ready in southern California. 5,400 cases. They vanished so fast that retailers began rationing customers to one bottle each, and the rest of the United States had to wait until the following year. Nobody had seen a bottle shaped like a head before.

  Behind the bottle stand actor Dan Aykroyd and artist John Alexander. The idea came from the story of the thirteen crystal skulls said to have been held by native peoples of the Americas — the Navajo, the Aztec, the Maya — and to project positive energy. The two insisted that the bottle was not a skull but a head: a symbol of life rather than of death.

  Production takes place in St. John's, Newfoundland, at one of the last government owned distilleries in the world. The raw material is peaches and cream corn, distilled four times into neutral spirit before the spirit is cut with local water down to 40%. The vodka is then filtered seven times, three of those passes running over Herkimer diamonds. Nothing is added — no glycerol, no citrus oils, no sugar.

  Nose

  Calm and grainy with a fine citrus edge. There is no spirit sting even when you go in close.

  Palate

  Corn sweetness settles in the middle of the tongue, soft and almost milky, with vanilla laid over the top.

  Enghaven Danish Premium Vodka is a Danish Vodka distilled from Danish potatoes at Enghaven near Randers and bottled at 40%.

  The Enghaven farm became a distillery in 2007, and the idea was simple from the start: whatever can be grown on the place should be refined on the place. The vodka is a distillery bottling in the literal sense, distilled, cut and filled in the same yard, with no middleman and no bought in neutral spirit.

  The potato is an awkward choice. It yields less alcohol per kilo than grain, it has to be cooked and broken down before fermentation can even begin, and it is heavier to handle. In return it leaves a mark. Potato spirit generally lands fuller and more oily in the mouth than grain spirit, and that rounded texture is exactly what you meet here.

  The distillate has not been scrubbed beyond recognition. A clear trace of the raw material survives into the finish, an earthy sweetness you will not find in a hard filtered wheat vodka. The producer recommends freezing the bottle and drinking it neat, and that is difficult to argue with.

  Mild and almost sweet. There is something creamy about it, with a faint earthy note underneath.

  The idea came from Jim Denoon, who works with the design and development of glass packaging for a living. It shows. The bottle is shaped as an alien head and is at least as much shelf theatre as it is packaging. Behind the gimmick sits a properly made vodka: the corn comes from Iowa, the spirit runs through five distillations, and it is finally filtered through meteorite material dated at over four billion years. The vodka is gluten free.

  Five distillations do something to the texture. It turns round and creamy rather than sharp, and the sweetness from the corn gets room to fill the middle before drying out again towards the end.

  Nose

  Almost neutral on the first pass. Give it a moment and a light vanilla sweetness appears, along with something green, close to mint leaf.

  Palate

  Creamy and round. Corn sweetness sits clearly in the middle, soft and nearly milky, until a peppery warmth cuts through it.
