Fentiman's Tonic

Long before tonic water became a hipster ingredient, Fentimans was already at it - with botanically brewed drinks fermented the old-fashioned way. Since 1905, the family has stuck to a recipe involving ginger root and a slow fermentation process that others abandoned long ago for the sake of efficiency. This is tonic with a past as a medicinal drink.

  • Bottle of Fentimans Connoisseurs Tonic Water 20 cl
    Item no.: 059763-615-1014

Quinine on its own tastes bitter and a little flat. Paired with the right sweeteners, it becomes something else entirely — citrusy, earthy and surprisingly complex. That's the exercise Fentimans has carried out with Connoisseurs Tonic Water.

    The Expert's Description

Fentimans Connoisseurs Tonic Water is a tonic water from the British drinks house Fentimans, known for its botanically brewed soft drinks. It's built around quinine from the bark of the cinchona tree, here balanced with carefully chosen sweeteners so the bitter base tone is joined by citrus and earthy nuances.

This tonic is made for anyone who wants a more serious, complex tonic rather than a simply sweetened one. It pairs beautifully with a citrus gin such as orange, grapefruit or lemon, but also works well with a juniper- or root-forward Gin for a more botanical experience.

    Tasting Notes

    The Tasting Experience

The first impression is the quinine's dry bitterness, quickly followed by citrus tones reminiscent of orange peel. Underneath it all lies an earthy depth that gives the tonic a seriousness you won't find in an ordinary sweetened tonic.

    Serving & Pairing Suggestions

Serve the tonic cold in a tall glass with plenty of ice. Choose a citrus gin with orange, grapefruit or lemon notes to amplify the tonic's own citrus character, or try a juniper- or root-forward gin for a more botanical, earthy whole.

    Item no.: 059763-615-10109

Sharp ginger, a touch of lemon and an unexpected hint of rose oil — Fentimans Ginger Beer is a mixer that insists on being noticed, whatever you mix it with.

    The Expert's Description

Fentimans Ginger Beer is a ginger-based soft drink from the British drinks house Fentimans, known for its botanically brewed products and exclusively pure raw materials. It is packed with a distinct ginger flavour and made with lemon juice and pure rose oil from the world-famous Rose Valley in Kazanlak, Bulgaria.

The result is an aromatic, assertive ginger beer that holds its own in countless cocktails without being drowned out. It is excellent mixed with vodka, dark rum or bourbon — and also works nicely alongside a spiced Gin.

    Tasting Notes

    The Tasting Experience

The ginger hits first and hard, sharp and warming without turning fiery. Lemon adds freshness, while a discreet hint of rose oil lays a floral layer underneath the spicy core, making the drink more complex than an ordinary ginger soft drink.

    Serving & Pairing Suggestions

Serve cold, ideally in a tall glass with plenty of ice. Top up with vodka for a classic Moscow Mule, or use dark rum for a Dark and Stormy-style drink where the ginger beer should stand out clearly without overpowering the spirit's character. A slice of fresh lime in the glass lifts the flavour further.

    Item no.: 059763-615-827

Dry, crisp and with a bitterness that bites back — Fentimans Pink Grapefruit Tonic Water is the tonic for anyone who would rather skip the sweet variety.

    The Expert's Description

Fentimans Pink Grapefruit Tonic Water is a tonic water from the British drinks house Fentimans, known for its botanically brewed soft drinks. It is made with grapefruit and quinine, with no artificial sweeteners, flavourings or preservatives, giving a refreshingly dry and crisp tonic.

The grapefruit brings a natural bitterness that works well alongside the sharpness of the quinine, so the tonic never turns too sweet or flat. Mix it with gin or vodka for a spicy long drink with a bitter-sweet depth, or try it alongside a citrus-driven Gin.

    Tasting Notes

    The Tasting Experience

The aroma is sharply citrusy with a hint of grapefruit's characteristic bitter peel. On the palate you first meet acidity and bitterness side by side, before the quinine rounds off the flavour with a dry, clean finish and no sweet aftertaste.

    Serving & Pairing Suggestions

Serve ice cold in a tall glass with plenty of ice. Mix with gin or vodka and top with a slice of fresh grapefruit to underline the tonic's own character. Ideal if you prefer a dry, bitter long drink over a sweet one.

  • Bottle of Fentimans Pink Rhubarb Tonic Water with pink design
    Item no.: 059763-615-1006

The pink colour alone is enough to bring back memories of rhubarb sweets from childhood. Fentimans has taken that tart, sweet feeling and poured it into a bottle of tonic water.

    The Expert's Description

Fentimans Pink Rhubarb Tonic Water is a tonic water from the British drinks house Fentimans, known for its botanically brewed soft drinks. It's made with striking pink rhubarb, which has a tart flavour of its own, and is designed as a sweeter, more nostalgic style of tonic rather than the classic dry approach.

Rhubarb and gin are a well-known pairing in Scandinavian bar culture, and this tonic is built for exactly that combination. Try it with a Gin that has floral or fruity notes, giving the rhubarb sweetness something to play against.

    Tasting Notes

    The Tasting Experience

The aroma is sweet and lightly tart, like a bowl of fresh rhubarb sprinkled with sugar. The flavour follows the same path — a clear rhubarb character with a tart edge, tied together by the quinine's bitterness in the finish, so the tonic never turns sugary.

    Serving & Pairing Suggestions

Serve the tonic cold in a tall glass with plenty of ice. It works well with a floral or fruity gin, but can also give a classic London Dry gin a sweeter counterpoint. A sprig of fresh mint or a thin slice of rhubarb in the glass completes the picture.

A bottle of sun-ripened Valencia oranges and fresh lemongrass — that's the short version of what waits in the glass once you crack open this tonic from Fentimans. The sweetness arrives first, the quinine bitterness follows.

    The Expert's Description

Fentimans Valencian Orange Tonic Water is a tonic water from the British drinks house Fentimans, known for its botanically brewed soft drinks. This edition is made with sweet Valencian oranges and infused with lemongrass, rounded off with a hint of quinine, resulting in a refreshing, aromatic tonic with a genuine taste of the Mediterranean.

Fentimans builds its drinks around natural ingredients and a botanical approach to flavour, where citrus, herbs and spices take the lead rather than artificial additives. The fresh orange sweetness and lemongrass make this tonic a natural match for Gin with citrus or herbal character.

    Tasting Notes

    The Tasting Experience

In the glass you first meet the sweet orange aroma, quickly followed by a green, faintly grassy note of lemongrass. The quinine sits underneath as a dry, lightly bitter finish that keeps the sweetness in check and keeps the tonic refreshing rather than cloying.

    Serving & Pairing Suggestions

Serve the tonic well chilled in a tall glass with plenty of ice, so the carbonation lasts as long as possible. Top up with a good citrus-forward gin — botanicals like orange peel, coriander or lemongrass in the recipe play especially well with the sweet, herbal notes. A slice of fresh orange in the glass underlines the flavour.

About Fentimans Tonic

Fentimans Tonic is a botanically brewed tonic, fermented according to an old recipe dating all the way back to 1905. For the newcomer it's a markedly more complex and herbal tonic than most standard brands; for the connoisseur, the fermentation process is the whole point - Fentimans still uses a slow, botanical brewing method that gives the drink a depth and complexity industrially made tonics rarely achieve.

History & Background

Fentimans was founded in 1905 by Thomas Fentiman in the northeast of England, originally as a producer of botanically brewed ginger beer, a drink that at the time was often sold door to door. The company held on to its traditional brewing method - a slow fermentation process with natural botanicals - throughout the 20th century, even as large parts of the industry switched to faster, industrial methods. Fentimans Tonic is a further development of this heritage and has won international recognition for bringing the old botanical brewing tradition into modern gin and tonic culture.

Production & Style

In autumn 2007, Fentimans launched the world's first botanically brewed tonic water, made using the same natural fermentation principles as the company's classic ginger beer.

Signature Style

Botanical, Bitter, Complex
The flavour offers a deeper, more complex bitterness than standard tonic, thanks to the botanical brewing process.
