Lillet Vermouth

James Bond ordered it under a different name in Casino Royale - Kina Lillet, the forerunner of the Lillet we know today. Since 1872, the Lillet family has made aromatised wine in the small town of Podensac near Bordeaux, a tradition that survived two world wars and a world-famous spy. This is a vermouth with a literary pedigree.

South of Bordeaux, in the village of Podensac, the Lillet family has since 1872 blended local white wine with the peel of sweet and bitter oranges. The result is an aperitif that has since found a permanent place behind bars worldwide.

    Expert's Description

Lillet Blanc Vermouth is a White Vermouth from the Bordeaux region of France, made from a base of white wine from the Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc grapes, with an alcohol content of 17%.

Brothers Paul and Raymond Lillet founded the house of Lillet Frères in Podensac in 1872 as wine and spirits merchants, and in 1887 they created their first aperitif under the name Kina Lillet, named after the cinchona bark that gave the drink its characteristic bitterness. The recipe is a blend of roughly 85% Bordeaux wines and 15% macerated citrus liqueurs, made from the peel of sweet oranges from Spain and Morocco and bitter oranges from Haiti. In 1986 the recipe was adjusted to the milder, sweeter style known today as Lillet Blanc, and production still takes place in Podensac.

Lillet Rose was created in 2011 as the house's first new colour in over 50 years, and it shares the same base of Bordeaux wines and macerated citrus liqueurs as Lillet Blanc, with a short skin maceration to give it its pink colour, along with a small proportion of Lillet Rouge. About Lillet Vermouth

Lillet is a French aromatised wine from Podensac near Bordeaux, available in three variants - Blanc, Rosé and Rouge - all at 17%. For the newcomer, Lillet is a light and refreshing gateway into the world of vermouth, lovely over ice with a slice of orange; for the connoisseur, the name is inseparable from cocktail history, not least through the Vesper martini from Ian Fleming's "Casino Royale", which made Lillet (then called Kina Lillet) world-famous.

History & Background

Brothers Paul and Raymond Lillet founded the company in 1872 in Podensac near Bordeaux, where they began producing aromatised wine using a recipe that blended wine with citrus peel and cinchona bark. The drink, originally called Kina Lillet, became a staple of French aperitif culture through the early 1900s and gained international fame when Ian Fleming had James Bond order it in "Casino Royale" in 1953. The brand later shortened its name to simply Lillet and has since expanded the range with Rosé and Rouge variants alongside the classic Blanc.

Production & Style

Lillet consists of around 85% wines from the Bordeaux region (Semillon for Blanc and Rosé, Merlot for Rouge) and 15% liqueurs, mainly citrus liqueurs made with orange peel from sweet oranges from Spain and Morocco, along with peel from bitter, green oranges from Haiti.

Signature Style

Citrus-fresh, Light, Elegant
The flavour offers ripe citrus notes, honey and a touch of herbs, carried by a light sweetness that makes it perfect as a chilled aperitif.
