Scapa Whisky

On Orkney, where the sea surrounds everything, Scapa has been distilling since 1885 and stands out for using a rare Lomond still - only a handful remain in all of Scotland. That gives the whisky an unusual softness, far from the peaty intensity often associated with Scotland's outer islands. Now owned by Pernod Ricard, Scapa remains a quiet counterpoint to its louder Orkney neighbour, Highland Park.

The sea around Orkney crashes hard against the cliffs, but the whisky from Scapa has always been the gentlest voice in the chorus. This 16-year-old is an echo from a bygone era.

    Expert's Description

Scapa 16 Year Old The Orcadian is a Single Orkney Malt Whisky, matured in ex-bourbon casks and bottled at 40%.

The release was introduced in 2008 as part of the 'The Orcadian' series, replacing the earlier 14-year-old version. It is now discontinued and has achieved cult status among island whisky collectors, representing the era when Scapa reclaimed its place in the market.

About Scapa

Scapa Distillery sits by the bay of Scapa Flow on Orkney and has since 1885 produced a markedly softer, less smoky whisky than its neighbour Highland Park. The distillery is today owned by Pernod Ricard and carries the rare Lomond still as part of its historic legacy.

History & Background

Scapa Flow was the Royal Navy's most important fleet anchorage during both world wars, and the distillery was repeatedly drawn into the war's infrastructure. The distillery has changed hands several times and was closed at points, most recently reopening for full production in 2004 after a refurbishment.

Production & Style

Scapa uses an unusual Lomond still for its first distillation, giving a heavier, more oily spirit than the typical Speyside style, though the whisky finishes soft and accessible.

Signature Style

Soft, Honeyed, Maritime
Honey and ripe pear meet a lightly salted, maritime undertone – a far softer Orkney whisky than its smoky neighbour.
