Maison Louis Latour is one of Burgundy's most prestigious wine houses, with roots dating back to the 18th century and a range that today cövers some of the region's most prestigious Grand Cru vineyards. The house is headquartered in Beaune and remains family-run after more than two centuries.
History & Background
The family's wine adventure began in 1731, when Denis Latour, from a family of coopers, bought his first vineyard plots in the Côte de Beaune. In 1768 the family settled in the village of Aloxe-Corton, a strategic turning point. Jean Latour formally founded Maison Louis Latour in 1797, after the French Revolution had liberalised access to vineyard ownership, and the house quickly grew in reputation, becoming a supplier to princes and kings. In 1867 the company expanded into wine trading and established offices in Beaune, where the headquarters remain today. Between 1870 and 1930, phylloxera devastated French vineyards, and the family's fifth Louis Latour responded by planting Chardonnay on the southern slope of the Corton hill, creating Corton-Charlemagne.
Production & Style
The house today owns over 48 hectares of vineyards, including 27 hectares of Grand Cru, allowing it to vinify prestigious terroirs such as Chambertin, Corton-Charlemagne and Romanée-Saint-Vivant.
