Zuidam Whisky

A Dutch family man with twenty years of experience at one of Europe's major spirits producers decided to strike out on his own. Fred van Zuidam built his own distillery on a plot in Baarle-Nassau in 1975, equipped with used stills and a stubborn ambition to prove that Holland could make whisky every bit as fine as Scotland. Fifty years later, the family still runs the plant, now with barley milled on traditional windmills as its signature.

    Millstone 2002/2008 Zuidam Distillers Dutch Single Malt Whisky was distilled in 2002 and bottled in 2008 after 6 years of maturation, bottled at 40%. Millstone is the Dutch whisky series from Zuidam Distillers, founded in 1975 by Fred van Zuidam in the border town of Baarle-Nassau. After decades producing genever and liqueurs, the distillery made its first experimental whisky barrels in 1996, and in 2007 Millstone launched as the Netherlands' first single malt whisky. The distillery follows a 'farm to glass' principle, growing most of its own grain, and the name Millstone honours the Dutch tradition of grinding grain in windmills.

About Zuidam Whisky

Zuidam is the Dutch family distillery that has proven since 1975 that great whisky isn't a Scottish or Irish exclusive. Best known is the house's Millstone whisky, made from Dutch barley still milled on old windmills, a detail that gives the whisky an earthy, authentic signature. For beginners, Zuidam is a surprising and approachable taste experience from outside the traditional whisky-producing countries, while connoisseurs value the family's versatility, spanning whisky, gin, and genever, all produced at the same small, craft-focused plant.

History & background

Fred van Zuidam founded the distillery in 1975 under the name Baarle International, after spending roughly twenty years at spirits producer De Kuyper in Schiedam, where he handled production, purchasing, and recipes. Driven by an ambition to go it alone, he bought a plot of land in Baarle-Nassau and built his distillery around used stills, a full barrel, and a handful of simple tanks. From this modest beginning, Zuidam grew into one of the Netherlands' most respected family distilleries, now carried forward by later generations of the same family. Today the distillery is especially known for its Millstone whisky, whose barley is still milled on traditional Dutch windmills.
