Mikkeller Spirits

Mikkeller Spirits is the brewery's answer to a midlife crisis that went well. The Danish microbrewery, known worldwide for experimental beer, brought that same playful approach into distilling and created a distillery in the heart of Copenhagen, where the boundaries between whisky, gin and liqueur are constantly challenged.

  • Oloroso Cask Black Mikkeller Spirits bottle with dark label
    Item no.: 22227865401-31

When an imperial stout meets Oloroso sherry casks, the result is something nutty, a little dry, and impossible to place in a conventional category. Mikkeller and Braunstein found that out firsthand.

    Expert description

Oloroso Cask Black Mikkeller Spirits Small Batch is a New Make Malt Spirit at 43%, distilled at Braunstein Distillery from Mikkeller Black imperial stout and briefly matured in Oloroso sherry casks. This collaboration pairs Mikkeller's brewing expertise with Braunstein's distillation knowledge. The Oloroso casks contribute rich, nutty notes and a suggestion of dark fruit to the young spirit. The result is an idiosyncratic spirit type that refuses to be called either whisky or beer.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Toasted nuts, light dried fruit and pale caramel. The Oloroso cask adds a discreet nuttiness and a faint sherry aroma.

    Palate

Soft and lightly nutty with dark raisins, a malty cereal note and a hint of chocolate. The sherry influence is subtle but present.

    Finish

Short to medium length with light sherry tones and a dry, nutty close.

    Did you know?

Oloroso is the driest and nuttiest style within the sherry family. While fino and amontillado are lighter and fresher, Oloroso adds a deeper, more complex sweetness — well-suited to lifting a young, unaged distillate.

  • Rum Cask Black Mikkeller Spirits bottle with dark label
    Item no.: 22227865401-30

What happens when you distil an imperial stout and mature the result in rum casks? Mikkeller and Braunstein found out — and landed on something soft, tropical and hard to categorise.

    Expert description

Rum Cask Black Mikkeller Spirits Small Batch is a Malt Spirit at 43%, distilled at Braunstein Distillery from Mikkeller Black, an imperial stout from Denmark's celebrated craft brewery Mikkeller. The collaboration combines Braunstein's distillation expertise with Mikkeller's brewing knowledge to create a spirit that sits outside easy classification. The malt spirit has been matured in rum casks, which contribute sweetness, tropical fruit notes and a rounded softness. Not beer, not rum, not whisky — something on its own terms.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Brown sugar and light caramel. Tropical fruit — banana, mango — mingles with warm sweetness and a touch of vanilla from the rum casks.

    Palate

Soft and rounded with dark sugar, baked fruit and a hint of chocolate from the beer base. The rum cask influence is clear and pleasant.

    Finish

Warm and lightly spiced with lingering sweetness and gentle rum notes. Shorter than an aged whisky, but satisfying.

Mikkeller Black, the beer distilled to make this malt spirit, is an imperial stout at 17.5% ABV — one of the strongest and most complex beers from the Danish craft brewery. Distilling such a heavyweight beer produces a malt base with unusual depth and character.

  • White Dog Mikkeller Spirits Small Batch bottle with dark label
    Item no.: 22227865401-33

White Dog is the spirit in its purest form — before any cask has had its say. Everything you taste is the grain, the fermentation and the distiller. Here it is Mikkeller Black imperial stout, distilled at Braunstein.

    Expert description

White Dog Mikkeller Spirits Small Batch is an unaged New Make Malt Spirit at 42%, distilled at Braunstein Distillery from Mikkeller Black, Mikkeller's powerful imperial stout. White Dog is the American term for unaged, new make spirit — the distillate before wood has had any influence. Here it is used deliberately: no cask maturation, no colour, no wood. Just a clean distillate from a complex beer base, giving a fascinating insight into what the spirit is before the cask takes over.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Fresh and clear with cereal aromas, light fruit tones and a soft malt sweetness. Clear fermentation character throughout.

    Palate

Clean and direct. Malt, a light fruity sweetness and a suggestion of grain bread. No cask notes — everything is the distillate.

    Finish

Short and clean. The malt lingers briefly and the alcohol has a gentle bite.

    Did you know?

The term "White Dog" originates from the American bourbon tradition, where unaged spirit was historically sold illegally and called "white lightning" or "white dog." Today many distilleries use the term to release their raw, unaged distillate — it is essentially a taste of the whisky's future before the cask gets to work.

About Mikkeller Spirits

Mikkeller Spirits was founded by the acclaimed Danish microbrewery Mikkeller, known for its experimental and often boundary-pushing beers, which with this distillery expanded its creative approach into an entirely new spirits category. Located in the heart of Copenhagen, the distillery combines traditional distilling methods with Mikkeller's signature creativity to produce whisky, gin and liqueurs that often draw on the brewery's cask stock and flavour universe. Collectors are drawn to the limited collaborations involving known beer styles and cask finishing, while newcomers can visit the distillery for guided tours and tastings.

History & Background

Mikkeller was founded in 2006 by Mikkel Borg Bjergsø and Kristian Klarup Keller, two high school teachers with a shared passion for experimental brewing, and quickly grew into one of the world's most respected "gypsy brewing" brands without owning its own brewery. The success of the beer later laid the groundwork for expanding into distilling, and Mikkeller Spirits was established as a natural extension of the company's curious, boundary-pushing DNA. Today the distillery is part of the wider Mikkeller universe, spanning bars and restaurants to breweries across several continents, all tied together by the same experimental spirit that started with two teachers and a dream of better beer.

History & background

Mikkeller was founded as a 'gypsy' brewery by Mikkel Borg Bjergsø and has since expanded to include spirits production.
