Widow Jane Whiskey

Beneath the streets near Brooklyn lie the legendary Rosendale mines, where the limestone for Brooklyn Bridge and the Empire State Building was quarried. Today, water from those mines is pumped up to a distillery that took its name from the mine's widow: Widow Jane.

About Widow Jane

Widow Jane is one of New York's newer whiskey distilleries, located in Red Hook, Brooklyn, taking both its name and water source from the historic Rosendale mines upstate. For newcomers it's exciting to taste a whiskey where the water itself has a tangible connection to some of America's most famous landmarks; for collectors, Widow Jane is one of the distilleries enthusiasts keep a particularly close eye on in the growing American craft whiskey scene.

History & Background

The Rosendale mines outside New York once supplied limestone for several of the country's most iconic structures, including the Brooklyn Bridge, the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty, and the Empire State Building. When the founders behind the Red Hook distillery chose a name and water source, they naturally landed on the mines and the female figure, Widow Jane, tied to their history. Water from the mines is used directly in production today, giving the distillery a historical grounding few other American whiskey brands can match.

Production & Style

The whiskey is proofed with water from the Widow Jane Mine, which according to the distillery gives a softer, more mineral character than ordinary spring water.

Signature Style

Mineral, Soft, Caramel
Caramel and a soft, almost silky texture, likely a result of the mine water's high mineral content, give the whiskey its distinct signature.
