Chateau du Breuil Calvados

A French château in Normandy that has made calvados since 1954, surrounded by no fewer than 22,000 Norman apple trees. The château itself was built in the 1700s-1800s, long before spirits production began. The strict AOC Pays d'Auge classification requires double distillation, yielding a softer, rounder calvados.

Château du Breuil is not just a name on a label – it is a genuine, 400-year-old château in Le Breuil-en-Auge, where the copper stills stand today in cellars beneath the same walls that once housed Norman nobility.

    Expert description

Chateau du Breuil Reserve du Chateau 8 Year Old is a French Calvados aged eight years in oak casks and bottled at 40%.

Château du Breuil has distilled calvados on its estate since 1954, when Philippe Bizouard bought the property to establish his own distillery. The calvados is double distilled in copper pot stills, as required in the Pays d'Auge, then aged at least eight years in oak casks in the château's cellars. Reserve du Château won Silver at the International Wine & Spirit Competition in London in 2020.

About Château du Breuil

Château du Breuil is a French calvados house in Pays d'Auge, Normandy, producing since 1954 on an estate dating to 1520. For newcomers, it's a soft, rounded calvados thanks to double distillation; for connoisseurs, one of the few houses where the apple orchard, cider production, and distillation all take place together on the same historic property.

History & Background

The château itself is far older than the spirits production and was built in the 1700s-1800s, giving the site a historic setting stretching back several centuries. Around the beautiful château lie 22,000 Norman apple trees, essential to the calvados produced here. The calvados is made from 100% naturally fermented cider and is classified under the stricter AOC Pays d'Auge rules, which require double distillation rather than the single distillation that is otherwise standard for calvados in general.

Production & Style

The calvados is distilled from apple cider from the estate's own orchards and aged in French oak casks.

Signature Style

Fruity, Full-Bodied, Spicy
The flavor offers a full-bodied apple fruitiness with spicy cask undertones.
