RoughStock Whiskey

RoughStock is Montana's whisky adventure, founded in 2007 by Bryan and Kari Schultz as the state's first legal distillery since Prohibition. At the foot of the Bridger mountain range, they use high-quality grain and meltwater from the surrounding peaks, staying close to nature and close to the raw material. This is American whisky from one of the country's less-explored distilling corners.

Roughstock Montana Black Label Whiskey USA is a more powerful, unfiltered version of the distillery's barley-based single malt whiskey, bottled at 61.5%. RoughStock Distillery opened in Bozeman, Montana, in 2009 and was both the first legal distillery in the state since Prohibition and the first to open in Montana in over 100 years, made possible by a 2005 change in state law. The distillery was founded by fourth-generation Montanans Bryan and Kari Schultz, who mortgaged everything they owned to realise the idea that 'Montana' and 'whiskey' belonged together. Unlike most American whiskeys, RoughStock uses local Montana barley instead of corn and rye.

About RoughStock

RoughStock was founded by Bryan Schultz in Bozeman, Montana, and was the state's first whiskey distillery. The name refers to the 'rough stock' events in rodeo, such as bronco riding and bull riding, a sport deeply rooted in Montana's culture.

History & Background

Schultz started the distillery with the ambition of creating a bourbon reflecting Montana's rugged, rural identity, far from Kentucky's established traditions. The distillery uses locally grown grain and has built a reputation as one of the leading craft producers in the American Northwest.

Production & Style

The bourbon is distilled from local grain and matured in Montana's cool, dry climate, markedly different from humid Kentucky, giving a slower, more controlled maturation.
