Ledaig Whisky

Ledaig is Tobermory's dark twin — same distillery, same copper stills, but with a bold hit of peat that turns the island's soft character into something raw and salted. It's Mull as it looked before the colourful harbour houses became what everyone remembers.

About Ledaig Whisky

Ledaig is Tobermory distillery's peated expression, named after the old Gaelic term for the harbour town on the Isle of Mull, where the distillery has stood since 1798, making it one of Scotland's oldest. The whisky is distilled on the same equipment as the unpeated Tobermory but uses peated malt, giving a raw, maritime character with notes of peat smoke, barley, olive and salt — a clear contrast to its softer sister whisky. Collectors take an interest in the older, independently bottled Ledaig releases, while newcomers get a different, more robust entry into peated whisky than the classic Islay names.

History & Background

The distillery on Mull was founded in 1798 by John Sinclair and has changed name and ownership numerous times through its history, along with long periods of closure, including during the depression of the 1930s and again in the 1970s and 1980s. The name Ledaig was used for the peated style early in the distillery's history, but it was only after reopening under the current owner, Distell (formerly Burn Stewart), that Ledaig became established as a fixed, standalone expression alongside the unpeated Tobermory. Today the two sister whiskies are one of the clearest examples of how a single distillery can produce two vastly different styles.

History & Background

The distillery was founded in 1798 and produces two different whisky styles under the same roof: the unpeated Tobermory and the peated Ledaig.

Production & Style

Ledaig is distilled using peated malt, giving it a smoky character that stands apart markedly from the distillery's unpeated sibling, Tobermory.

Signature Style

Smoky, Maritime, Complex
The taste offers a smoky, maritime character with notes of seaweed and salt, typical of Mull whisky.
