Clase Azul Tequila

A Mexican tequila as famous for its hand-painted ceramic bottles as for what's inside. Every bottle is shaped and painted by Mexican artisans, so no two are ever quite the same. That makes Clase Azul equal parts spirit and collector's object.

  • Hand-painted ceramic decanter of Clase Azul Plata Tequila with blue pattern
    Item no.: 22227865480-67093-00063

Every decanter is hand-painted, and no two look quite the same. This isn't just tequila in a bottle - it's a piece of Mexican craftsmanship you can drink from.

    Expert Description

Clase Azul Plata is a 100% Agave Mexican Plata Tequila bottled at 40%.

The brand was founded in 1997 by Arturo Lomelí, who set out to honour Mexican ceramic craftsmanship through his tequila. Each decanter is a handmade ceramic bottle inspired by traditional Talavera pottery, shaped and painted by hand by local artisans in Santa María Canchesda, Jalisco - a process that takes about two weeks per bottle, so no two bottles are ever quite alike. The agave is slow-cooked in traditional brick ovens for 72 hours, fermented with the house's own proprietary yeast, and double distilled. The Plata is unaged, showcasing the pure, fresh character of the agave.

    Expert Description

Clase Azul Reposado Tequila is a 100% Agave Mexican Reposado Tequila with an ABV of 40%. The tequila comes from the Clase Azul brand, founded in 1997 by Arturo Lomelí in Guadalajara with the ambition of turning tequila into a global story of Mexican craftsmanship. Every bottle is a unique, hand-painted ceramic decanter, made by artisans at the Tradición Mazahua workshop, where more than 350 people, most of them women, carry the traditional craft forward.

The reposado is aged eight months in American oak barrels, giving it a round, full character before it is filled into the iconic bottle. A single decanter can take up to two weeks to paint, and no two bottles end up looking exactly the same.

About Clase Azul

Clase Azul is a Mexican tequila, world-famous for its unique, hand-painted ceramic bottles made by Mexican artisans. For newcomers, the bottle itself is an experience - an easy way into the idea that tequila can be as refined as cognac; for collectors, the appeal lies in each release being produced in limited runs with unique ceramic designs, which makes older bottles sought after well beyond the value of what's inside.

History & Background

The brand was founded in the late 1990s by Arturo Lomelí with an ambition to raise tequila's status to a luxury product on par with fine cognac. From the start, the bottle mattered as much as the contents - Lomelí saw potential in linking tequila with Mexican craftsmanship, at a time when the category was largely seen in the US as a cheap party drink. The strategy worked: today Clase Azul is one of the most recognisable luxury tequila brands in the world, and the hand-painted bottles have themselves become sought-after collector's items.

Production & Style

The tequila is distilled from 100% blue agave and matured in various cask types depending on the release, often for extended periods for extra depth.

Signature Style

Full-Bodied, Sweet, Complex
The flavour is full-bodied and complex, with sweet, caramel-like notes from the cask maturation.
