Modavi Wine

A Danish wine project exploring what the Danish climate can do for the grape. MoDaVi combines classic winemaking methods with a modern Danish twist, grown across two vineyards in southern Jutland. It's proof that Danish wine is more than a novelty - it's a craft still evolving.

  • Bottle of Modavi Boblen Den Rode Danish sparkling red wine
    Item no.: 22227865479-1106-19558

At a vineyard near Kolding, where the Danish climate is far from ideal for growing grapes, Modavi makes something few other Danish producers attempt: a red sparkling wine from the hardy Rondo grape.

    Expert's Description

Modavi Boblen Den Rode 2018 is a Danish Sparkling Wine from Kolding made from Rondo with an alcohol content of 12%. Modavi Vingaard was established in 2004 and today grows around 14,500 vines across 6 hectares, mainly the Solaris and Rondo varieties, both bred to handle Denmark's shorter season and lower average temperatures. Boblen Den Rode is made using the Traditional Method, the same technique used in Champagne, where the second fermentation happens in the bottle itself. The result is a rare Danish red sparkling wine, vintage 2018.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Fruity on the nose, with red berries and a touch of the freshness typical of Nordic viticulture.

    Palate

Elegant and lively on the palate, with good acidity and a fine mousse that carries the fruit well.

    Finish

The finish is long, with a last hint of dark berries.

    Serving & Food Pairing

Serve at 8-10°C in a champagne flute. Decanting is not needed. The wine works well as a welcome drink or with small appetizers.

  • Bottle of Modavi Solen Danish white wine with yellow label
    Item no.: 22227865479-1106-19561

The Solaris grape got its name for the simple reason that it ripens earlier than most other white grape varieties - an advantage that is hard to overstate when the vineyard sits near Kolding rather than in Burgundy.

    Expert's Description

Modavi Solen 2018 is a Danish White Wine from Kolding made from Solaris with an alcohol content of 12.5%. Modavi Vingaard was established in 2004 and today grows around 14,500 vines across 6 hectares, where Solaris is one of the main varieties precisely because it is bred to ripen early and cope with Denmark's shorter growing season. Solen is aged for four months in oak barrels, which adds extra facets and a rounder structure than is typically found in unoaked Danish white wines.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Plenty of citrus and ripe fruit on the nose.

    Palate

Full-bodied on the palate with a fine aromatic balance and a hint of vanilla from the oak ageing.

    Finish

The finish is smooth and reasonably long, with a pleasant bite.

    Serving & Food Pairing

Should be aerated before serving at 10°C, preferably in a white wine glass. Decanting is recommended to open up the wine. Solen pairs with fish and light Danish dishes.

Solaris was developed in Germany in 1975 by crossing several grape varieties and is today one of the most widely planted white grapes in both Denmark and Sweden, precisely because it performs well in a cooler climate.
