The Chess Malt Collection

The Chess Malt Collection is 32 single cask releases, each representing a unique piece on the chessboard - from two kings to sixteen pawns. The series is created by the Danish wine and spirits firm behind LAGO-import, which has specialized since 1989 in sourcing and bottling rare Scotch casks. For the collector, it’s a multi-year journey through Scotland’s distilleries, one chess move at a time.

  • Ardmore 17 year old The Chess Malt Collection G7 bottle, Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky
    Item no.: 505956-498796-455-4

Thirty-two bottles, thirty-two chess pieces. Two kings, two queens, four bishops, four knights, four rooks and sixteen pawns, each one a whisky from a different distillery. This one stands on g7, and behind the piece sits a seventeen year old Ardmore at full cask strength.

    The Expert's Description

Ardmore 17 Years Old The Chess Malt Collection G7 is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured entirely in bourbon wood and bottled at 59.7% cask strength. It was distilled in February 2002 and bottled in June 2019, and the cask gave 239 bottles.

The Chess Malt Collection is a series of 32 bottlings from different distilleries across Scotland, where each bottle corresponds to a piece on the chessboard, split evenly between black and white. The series gathers distilleries you rarely see side by side, tied together by a concept rather than by a region or a cask type.

Ardmore is one of the few Highland distilleries with peat smoke as a core style, and after seventeen years in bourbon wood the smoke has grown softer and better integrated. The whisky is neither chill filtered nor coloured.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Tropical fruit first, mango, pineapple and a little melon, which is typical of long maturation in bourbon casks. Beneath sit toasted nuts, vanilla and a light dry smoke closer to cold ash than a fire.

    Palate

Full and oily. Tropical fruit and honey open, then nuts, vanilla and a dry smoky edge. The 59.7% is pronounced, but after seventeen years there is roundness enough to carry it. Water draws the fruit further forward.

    Finish

Long and dry. Smoke, toasted nuts and oak, with a final sweetness of tropical fruit that lingers.

    Flavour Profile

Smoky · Tropical Fruit · Nutty · Vanilla · Cask Strength · Oaky

    Investment Potential

Medium. The series is built to be collected, and a concept of 32 pieces creates demand for the individual bottles long after release. With only 239 bottles from this cask, an age of seventeen years and full cask strength, there are several reasons this one will be hard to find again.

    Did You Know?

The series consists of 32 different whiskies, one for each piece on a chessboard: two kings, two queens, four bishops, four knights, four rooks and sixteen pawns, split evenly between black and white. The designation G7 refers to the square on the board, and on a chessboard a pawn stands on g7 at the start of the game.

  • Bunnahabhain bottle from The Chess Malt Collection with chess motif
    Item no.: 0597998-7712

A chessboard holds 32 pieces, and The Chess Malt Collection has given every single one of them a bottle of whisky – this 17 Years Old Bunnahabhain is one of them.

    Expert's Description

Bunnahabhain 17 Years Old The Chess Malt Collection is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in a sherry hogshead and bottled at 53.4%.

The Danish bottler The Chess Malt Collection has, since 1989, selected single casks from across Scotland and let each bottle stand for a piece on the chessboard – two kings, two queens, four bishops, four knights, four rooks and sixteen pawns, split between the classic black and white. This Bunnahabhain is bottled as rook A8-F7, number 22 in the line-up.

The whisky was distilled in November 2008 and rested for 17 years in a sherry hogshead before being bottled in November 2025 without chill filtration and without added colour.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Dark sherry and dried fruit settle around a whisper of peat ash and toasted almond.

    Palate

Full and spicy with raisins, walnuts and a touch of leather, balanced against the sherry's sweetness.

    Finish

Long and dry with lingering spice and a faint last trace of smoke.

  • Craigellachie 21 years Chess Malt Collection sherry matured bottle
    Item no.: 059766-7419

Thirty-two bottles, thirty-two pieces. The Chess Malt Collection is built as a chess set where each distillery is assigned a role — and Craigellachie is not a pawn.

    Expert description

Craigellachie 21 years The Chess Malt Collection is a Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in a sherry butt and bottled at cask strength of 52.3%.

The whisky was distilled in 1995 and bottled in 2017. The collection consists of 32 unique single cask releases, each bottle representing a chess piece: two kings, two queens, four bishops, four knights, four rooks and sixteen pawns, split between black and white. Craigellachie condenses in worm tubs and makes a heavy, meaty spirit, which after twenty-one years in a sherry cask has gained both depth and a dark fruit sweetness without losing its mineral edge.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Rich and inviting. Raisins, dark dried fruits, chocolate and spiced Christmas cake.

    Palate

Powerful and complex, with layers of caramel, orange peel, nuts and dark chocolate, underpinned by tobacco notes and spiced oak.

    Finish

Long and persistent with bittersweet fruit, chocolate and a touch of white pepper.

    Investment potential

High. Twenty-one years in one sherry cask within a collection that exists only in 32 releases. The Chess Malt Collection is actively collected as a whole, and individual pieces get hard to find quickly.

    Did you know?

The chess pieces in the collection are not assigned at random. The rarer and older the whisky, the higher the rank it receives — so a king or queen in the series is at the same time a signal of what is in the bottle.

  • Glenburgie Chess Malt Collection D7 bottle with chess piece on the label
    Item no.: 505956-498796-455-9

Thirty-two bottles, one for every piece on a chessboard. That is how The Chess Malt Collection is built, and each bottling carries a square name. D7 is a pawn’s starting square, and behind that particular piece sits a refill hogshead of Glenburgie from February 1998.

    The expert's description

Glenburgie 23 Year Old The Chess Malt Collection D7 is a Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky from a refill hogshead, bottled at 54% in 238 bottles.

The cask was filled in February 1998 and emptied in October 2021 after twenty-three years. A refill hogshead gives slowly, and over that length of time the result is a whisky where the distillery takes up more room than the wood. The bottling is non-chill filtered and carries natural colour.

The series consists of thirty-two different bottlings from different distilleries, split evenly between black and white: two kings, two queens, four bishops, four knights, four rooks and sixteen pawns. It is a collecting project as much as a whisky range, and several of the squares are already hard to find.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Tropical fruit and old oak, with pineapple, mango and a trace of wax. There is a light smoky note under the fruit and a nuttiness that twenty-three years has laid in.

    Palate

Full and oily. Tropical fruit and nuts first, then a dry, lightly smoky edge and a firm spiced middle. The 54% gives the whisky weight without hiding the age.

    Finish

Long. Nuts, dry oak and a final wisp of smoke that lingers well after the fruit has gone.

    Investment potential

Medium. A twenty-three year old Glenburgie in 238 bottles cannot be repeated, and the bottling forms part of a series of thirty-two that is collected as a whole. That series structure means demand comes not only from whisky drinkers but also from those chasing the missing squares.

    Did you know?

In 1958 Glenburgie had two Lomond stills fitted, producing a heavier spirit under the name Glencraig. It was intended for blending, and very little has ever been bottled as single malt. The stills were removed again in 1981.
