About Jura
The Isle of Jura sits just northeast of Islay off Scotland's west coast, but despite that neighbourly proximity, Jura whisky is far less peated than many of its Islay counterparts. Around 200 people and somewhere between 5,000 and 6,000 red deer call the island home, and its only distillery sits in the small community with one shop, one pub and one road. For beginners, that means an accessible, fruity island whisky without overwhelming smoke, while collectors appreciate how a place this remote maintains a consistent, global export profile.
History & background
Distilling on Jura can be traced back to 1810, but the distillery as it stands today was rebuilt and restarted in 1963. The island's most famous resident is arguably author George Orwell, who lived on Jura in the house Barnhill while writing the novel "1984" – one of literary history's most influential works, created amid exactly the kind of isolation the island is still known for.
Production & style
Jura draws its water from the spring "the Bhaille Mhargaidh", which runs over stone and picks up only a touch of peat along the way, giving the whisky its characteristic light, clean profile. The distillery's two stills are among the tallest in the industry, contributing to a lighter, cleaner spirit than the more heavily peated whiskies often found on the neighbouring island.
