The English Whisky Co

When St George's Distillery opened in Norfolk in 2006, it was England's first new whisky distillery in over a hundred years. The Nelstrop family dared what others had given up on: proving that England could make whisky just as seriously as its northern neighbour.

  • The English Distillery Co whisky bottle bottled by Stirk Brothers
    Item no.: 059763-615-880

A decade before English whisky was widely known abroad, The English Distillery Co in Norfolk filled its first cask. This single cask, bottled by Stirk Brothers, is one of the rare survivors from the distillery's earliest years — a time when the whole English whisky project was still an experiment.

    Expert's Description

The English Distillery Co 10 Year Old Stirk Brothers is a Single Malt English Whisky matured in an ex-bourbon cask and bottled at 50%.

The distillery — known today as The English Distillery Co, formerly St George's Distillery — opened in 2006 as the first newly built English whisky distillery in over a hundred years. This bottling comes from cask number 179, distilled in 2011 and later selected by independent bottler Stirk Brothers, who drew 254 bottles straight from the cask without mingling them with any other.

Stirk Brothers works on a small scale, hunting for casks with clear character rather than volume, which makes their selection a regular stop for collectors looking for alternatives to the big, familiar names.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

The nose offers vanilla custard and toasted oak, backed by green apple and a touch of cereal.

    Palate

On the palate the whisky turns rich, with caramel, honey biscuit and a light nutty sweetness, while the ex-bourbon cask lends a dry, woody undertone.

    Finish

The finish is long and spiced, with black pepper and a faintly bitter edge of dark chocolate.

About The English Whisky Co

The English Whisky Co opened St. George's Distillery in Norfolk in 2006, becoming England's first legal whisky producer in over a hundred years. For newcomers it's an accessible way into English whisky with a surprisingly fast maturation; for collectors it's notable that Norfolk's warmer climate gives an 'angels' share' of 5-6% a year versus Scotland's roughly 2%, meaning the whisky develops faster and is rarely sold with high age statements, since the casks simply evaporate too quickly.

The distillery was founded by James and Andrew Nelstrop and has since built a strong position as a pioneer of English whisky.

History & Background

The English Whisky Co. opened in 2006 at St George's Distillery in Norfolk and was the first new whisky distillery in England in over 100 years. It was founded by father-and-son team James and Andrew Nelstrop and quickly earned a good reputation thanks to former master distiller David Fitt, whose Scottish experience helped give the whisky a convincing, fast-maturing character.

Production & Style

The whisky is released, among other things, in the ongoing "Chapter" series, which documents the distillery's development year by year.

Signature Style

Sweet, Fruity, Round
The whisky offers a sweet, fruity character with a round finish.
