Badger Mountain Vineyard Wine

Badger Mountain was the first winery in Washington State to earn official organic certification, long before it was fashionable. Bill Powers founded the estate in 1982 and, five years later, committed fully to organic farming before consumers were even asking for it. This is wine that was, quite literally, ahead of its time.

In 1990, Badger Mountain became the first certified organic vineyard in the state of Washington. The family has stuck to the same philosophy ever since - grapes grown without pesticides, and wine without added sulfites, just what nature puts in the bottle on its own.

    Expert's Description

Badger Mountain Vineyard Chardonnay Organic 2019 is a White Wine from Columbia Valley in the USA made from the Chardonnay grape, bottled at 12.5% ABV.

The vineyard sits on an 80-acre estate in Kennewick in eastern Washington and was, in 1990, the first certified organic vineyard in the state. The grapes are grown entirely without synthetic fertiliser or pesticides, and the wine is labelled NSA - No Sulfites Added - meaning the only sulfites in the bottle are the ones that occur naturally during fermentation.

About Badger Mountain Vineyard

Bill Powers established Badger Mountain Vineyard in the US in 1982, and it was the first winery in Washington State to earn USDA organic certification. Today Badger Mountain uses exclusively organic, approved inputs in production, with no artificial aids, and the vineyards are kept in natural balance. For the conscious consumer, it is a rare chance to get American quality wine with a genuine, documented green footprint, while the flavor delivers the fresh fruit character associated with Washington's cool climate.

History & Background

Powers decided to commit fully to organic wine production in 1987, partly to take responsibility for the environment and partly to make wines that were as natural as possible. The decision required patience, since converting to organic farming takes several years and initially reduces yields significantly. Decades later, Badger Mountain stands as one of the most respected proofs that organic viticulture can go hand in hand with high quality, and the Powers family still runs the vineyard on the same principles.

Production & Style

The grapes grow without synthetic pesticides in the Columbia Valley region's dry, sunny climate.
