Årø Vingård

In the middle of the Little Belt, surrounded by sea and wind, grapes grow that no one thought could thrive in Denmark. Årø Vingård is proof that a good idea and stubbornness can overcome even a Nordic climate.

  • Årø Vingård Honningsyp Liqueur 35 cl 16.5%
    Item no.: 2222-0356

On the small island of Årø, tucked into the Little Belt where vines grow closer to the water than almost anywhere else in Denmark, sits a bottle that brings together the island's two sweetest treasures: the grapes and the bees. Honningsyp from Årø Vingård is made with honey from the vineyard's own hives in the apple orchard, and the result is soft, golden and full of late-summer warmth.

    Expert's Description

Årø Vingård Honningsyp Liqueur is a Danish honey liqueur from Årø Vingård, bottled at 16.5%. The bottle belongs to the vineyard's small range of liqueurs, made alongside the estate's wines, on the same soil and with the same philosophy of using what the island itself provides.

The vineyard's story began in 2004, when Svend Aage planted the first 125 vines on Årø after visiting a small winegrower in Christiansfeld. It grew year by year, and in 2015 Lisbeth and Jakob Lei took over the estate, just before a harvest, with plans to turn it into a year-round destination built around wine, apples and honey. Today the fields hold more than 5,000 vines and 1,200 apple trees, and the beehives dotted around the orchard supply the honey behind this very bottle.

Honningsyp is an old Danish tradition: spirits sweetened with honey until they turn round, sweet and gentler in strength. Årø Vingård's version is made with honey from its own bees, giving the liqueur a softness that only comes when the raw ingredient hasn't travelled far.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

The nose offers warm honey and a touch of beeswax, with a hint of ripe fruit from the orchard's apple trees.

    Taste

The palate is round and sweet, with honey at its centre and a light acidity at the edges that keeps it from tipping into sweetness overload.

    Finish

The finish is soft and gently warming, lingering with one last note of flower honey.

  • Bottle of Danish red wine from Årø Vingård with dark red label
    Item no.: 059666-96322

Out in the Lillebælt strait, where the current splits Haderslev Fjord from Assens, lies Årø – 600 hectares of Danish island life, with fewer than 200 year-round residents, apple trees and salt air. This is where the grapes for this red wine grow, and 2018 was one of the years the Danish summer truly delivered.

    Expert's Description

Årø Vingård Rødvin 2018 is a Red Wine from Årø in Denmark made from Léon Millot, Rondo and Regent grapes, bottled at 12% ABV.

The vineyard was founded in 2004 by Svend Aage, who planted the first 125 vines after visiting a winegrower in Christiansfeld. By 2007 it had grown to 2,200 vines, and bottles went on sale from 2008. Today it's Jakob and Lisbeth Leij who run the place – they took over just before the 2015 harvest and have since expanded to 5,600 vines, alongside 1,200 apple trees. Léon Millot, Rondo and Regent are hybrid varieties bred to cope with the Danish climate, and together they produce a red wine with more colour and body than you might expect this far north. 2018 was a warm vintage in Denmark, and the wine's ripeness shows it.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Blackcurrant and blueberry lead the way, with a touch of cherry stone and a faint, toasted note from the subtle oak influence.

    Palate

Light yet surprisingly full-bodied – the berry character carries through, the tannins are soft and well judged, giving a pleasant structure without ever feeling heavy.

    Finish

Clean and fruity, with a calm trail of dark berries and a discreet hint of oak.

    Serving & Food Pairing

Serve at 16-18°C in a standard red wine glass – no decanting needed. It pairs well with lighter grilled dishes, poultry and veal, but also works nicely on its own after dinner. Drink it now for the fruit-forward style, or give it 1-3 years and it opens up a little further.

  • Bottle of Årø Vingård Sommergin, Danish gin from Haderslev Fjord
    Item no.: 22222482-81663

On the tiny island of Årø in the Little Belt, where vineyards meet salt marsh, sits Årø Vingård. The winemakers here paired their grapes with juniper and wild coastal herbs to create a summery gin grown from their own soil.

    Expert's description

Årø Vingård Sommergin is a Danish Gin traditionally distilled at the vineyard's own facility and bottled at 42%.

Årø Vingård has made wine on this small island in Haderslev Fjord since 2004. When they set out to find their own gin botanicals, they consulted local nature guides about what actually grows wild on Årø Kalv, a tiny islet just off the main island.

Juniper forms the classic backbone, while liquorice root and coriander seed add warmth and depth. Sea rocket from the salt marshes lends a light peppery lift, and rosehip leaves round the flavour off with a soft floral note.

The result is a soft, summery gin with a clear sense of place, made by people who know this island's nature better than most.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

The nose offers fresh juniper and a touch of liquorice sweetness, backed by a light, herbal, coastal note.

    Palate

The palate is round and soft with mild sweetness, medium bitterness and a hint of peppery warmth from the coriander seed.

    Finish

The finish is long and floral, with a last trace of rosehip and fresh herbs.

  • Golden apple liqueur bottle from Danish island vineyard with rustic label
    Item no.: 2222-0355

On the small island of Årø in the Little Belt, where apple trees line the vineyard's rows, small aromatic paradise apples are picked to become this golden liqueur. It's a bottle that tastes of Danish summer and one island's proud orchard.

    Expert description

Årø Vingård Apple Liqueur Paradise Apple is a Danish fruit liqueur at 16.5% ABV, made from paradise apples grown on Årø Vingård's own plantation on the island of Årø in Haderslev Fjord. The small, intensely aromatic paradise apples are pressed and processed into a liqueur with a beautiful golden colour and a natural, concentrated apple sweetness only these small apple varieties can give. The vineyard, which today runs both vineyards and a larger apple plantation, has specialised in turning the island's fruit into wines, cider and liqueurs with local identity.

The liqueur is gently produced so the paradise apples' fresh character is preserved, and its moderate strength makes it pleasant to enjoy both neat and in cocktails.

    Taste

The nose offers fresh apples, a touch of blossom and ripe fruit skin, while the palate is round and soft with a fine balance between natural sweetness and a light acidity that keeps the liqueur fresh throughout.

About Aaro Vineyard

Årø Vingård is a Danish vineyard located on the small island of Årø near Haderslev, overlooking the Little Belt. The vineyard grows both grapes for wine and apples for cider and apple wine, and with 5,600 vines and 1,200 apple trees it has become one of the more established names in Denmark's young wine industry. Because wine production was effectively illegal in Denmark until as recently as 1999, Årø Vingård is part of a wine tradition still very much being built - making every bottle interesting for anyone following Danish wine's development from soil to bottle.

Its founding came at a pivotal moment in Danish wine history - wine production was effectively illegal in Denmark until 1999.
