Blanton's Whiskey

When Elmer T. Lee bottled the first Blanton's in 1984, he unknowingly created an entirely new category: single barrel bourbon. Each bottle comes from a single cask, named after Albert B. Blanton, a former head of the distillery. The iconic bottle with horse-topped stoppers - which together spell B-L-A-N-T-O-N-S across a full case - is today just as recognisable as the whiskey itself.

  • Blanton’s Single Barrel 93 proof Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey 46.5%
    Item no.: 22227865410-101501

The original bottle, the original horse figure on the stopper — the world's first modern single-barrel bourbon.

    Expert description

Blanton's Single Barrel 93 proof Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is the brand's original edition, where each bottle comes from a single, hand-selected barrel, bottled at 46.5%. Blanton's is named after Colonel Albert Bacon Blanton, who started as an office boy at the Buffalo Trace distillery at age 16 and became the company's president in 1921, a role he held until 1952. He personally selected the best 'honey barrels' from Warehouse H for his guests and bottled whiskey one barrel at a time. In 1984, master distiller Elmer T. Lee honoured him by launching the world's first modern single-barrel bourbon, based on barrels from that same warehouse.

    Palate

The palate is round and full with caramel, honey and lightly spiced oak.

  • Blantons Single Barrel Bourbon Special Reserve Kentucky Straight Bourbon Bourbon Whiskey 40% 40% ABV
    Item no.: 505956-498796-572

Some bottles carry a date that means nothing to the world and everything to the collector who finally tracks it down. This one was filled from barrel 138 on Rick 25 in Buffalo Trace's Warehouse H, and on the 1st of October 2005 it was dumped, bottled, and sent out into a market that had barely started paying attention to single barrel bourbon.

    Expert's Description

Blanton's Special Reserve is a Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey from Buffalo Trace Distillery, matured in new, charred casks of white American oak and bottled at 40%.

Special Reserve is the gentlest of Blanton's single barrel expressions and is sold exclusively outside the United States, built for drinkers who want Blanton's signature character in a softer, more approachable form than the 46.5% Original. Like every Blanton's release, it matures only in Warehouse H, the distillery's sole metal-clad warehouse, built by Albert B. Blanton in the years following Prohibition. Metal conducts heat far faster than the traditional brick warehouses, and the sharper temperature swings through Kentucky's seasons push the whiskey deeper into the oak than it would otherwise reach.

This bottle comes from barrel no. 138 on Rick 25 and was dumped on 1 October 2005, a date that is always printed on the label so collectors can trace exactly which barrel and which day the whiskey left the wood. Atop the bottle sits one of eight classic horse-and-jockey stoppers, which together spell out B-L-A-N-T-O-N-S and depict a race from start to finish.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Cedar and ripe raisin meet a touch of florals and a shy, understated vanilla.

    Palate

Light and airy on the tongue, with vanilla and caramel drifting around dried fruit and a flick of white pepper.

    Finish

Oak, a hint of rye spice and a touch of leather, mild and medium in length.

    Flavour Profile

Spiced · Sweet · Fruity · Light Oak

    Investment Potential

Medium. A 2005 dump date is rare to come across today, and older Warehouse H barrels like this one draw collectors chasing specific vintages and dates. That said, Special Reserve is the lowest-proof expression in the Blanton's range and typically doesn't command the same premium as Original, Gold or Straight From the Barrel.

    Did You Know?

This bottle was dumped in 2005, a full decade before Blanton's truly exploded as a global collector's item on social media around 2015. Back then, it could still be found on shelves without a queue or a bidding war.

  • Blanton's Straight From The Barrel Proof 128.5 Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey 64.25%
    Item no.: 2295-8956

There's only one place on earth where this whiskey is born – Warehouse H at Buffalo Trace in Kentucky, where Kentucky's brutal summers and cold winters push bourbon and oak together harder than almost anywhere else on the property. From here, the whiskey is pulled straight out of the barrel, no water, no filter. This is Blanton's at its rawest.

    Expert's Description

Blanton's Straight From The Barrel is a Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey matured in new charred American oak barrels and bottled at barrel proof of 64.25%.

This expression is uncut and unfiltered, dumped straight from the barrel with no adjustment to strength or appearance. It shares the same high-rye mash bill (Mash Bill #2) as the rest of the Blanton's range, but where Original and Gold Edition are cut down to 46.5% and 51.5% respectively, Straight From The Barrel keeps the whiskey's full, natural barrel strength.

For years this bottle was only available outside the U.S., mainly in Japan, where the rights to Blanton's belong to Takara Shuzo. Buffalo Trace Distillery still distills and ages every Blanton's expression, no matter where it ends up being sold. Since 2020, a small allocation has also reached the U.S. market, though it remains a bottle worth hunting for.

Because each bottle comes from a single barrel, the proof shifts from one dump to the next, typically somewhere between 125 and 135. This particular dump lands at 128.5 proof, and the barrel's dump date is printed right on the label, so no two bottles are quite the same.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Dark chocolate and caramel meet an earthy hint of walnut and hazelnut, with the heat to come already announcing itself.

    Palate

The barrel proof unfolds into warm vanilla, oak and toasted nuts, spicy and intense, with a trace of butterscotch and honey underneath.

    Finish

Long and warming, with spice and oak lingering well after the last sip.

    Natural color: Yes

    Flavor Profile

    Full-Bodied · Spicy · Sweet · Oak-Driven

    Investment Potential

Medium. Blanton's is one of the most collected bourbon names in the world, and Straight From The Barrel is the most concentrated expression in the lineup, recently named Best Single Barrel Bourbon at the World Whiskies Awards. That said, it's a recurring part of Blanton's core range rather than a one-off release, which keeps the potential at medium rather than high.

    Did You Know?

Blanton's was created in 1984 by master distiller Elmer T. Lee as his personal parting gift to the industry. It was the world's first commercially available single barrel bourbon, and it single-handedly created an entirely new category: super premium bourbon.

About Blanton's

Blanton's is a single barrel bourbon from Buffalo Trace, created by Elmer T. Lee in 1984 as the world's first commercial single barrel release. For a newcomer, it's a sweet, approachable introduction to premium bourbon; for the connoisseur, Blanton's is the very beginning of an entire category - the invention of the single barrel concept changed how bourbon is marketed and perceived, and the collectible horse-topper stoppers have turned even empty bottles into their own small hobby.

History & Background

Elmer T. Lee launched Blanton's in 1984 after decades of work at the distillery, creating an entirely new category within bourbon since copied by countless other brands. The eight horse figures on the bottle's stopper together spell out the letters in 'Blanton's' when collected across bottles, a detail that has made the brand popular among collectors.

Production & Style

The bourbon is selected barrel by barrel from Buffalo Trace's 'Warehouse H', a metal-clad warehouse giving distinct temperature variation and thus a characteristic flavour profile.

Signature Style

Caramel, Nutty, Elegant
Caramel, roasted nuts and a light vanilla sweetness give a smooth, elegant bourbon that has defined the standard for the entire single barrel category.
