Simpsons was founded in 2014 by Charles and Ruth Simpson, who, after years growing grapes in France, planted their feet firmly in English soil. The vineyard is called Roman Road, named for the route the Romans took when they brought England's first vines in AD 43.

Simpsons Wine Estate was planted in 2014 by husband and wife Ruth and Charles Simpson in Kent, as part of the marked growth of the English wine scene during the 2010s. The couple had previously run a wine estate in the Languedoc in southern France before returning home to focus on English viticulture in the chalky soil that geologically resembles the subsoil of the Champagne region. The venture is part of a broader development, where a warmer climate has made it possible to grow high-quality grapes this far north. Simpsons is today regarded as one of the most promising names in the new English wine wave.
