Daniel Bouju Cognac
Daniel Bouju is made in a barn, not a factory — quite literally. The family has distilled cognac from the same recipe since 1804, with no caramel and no shortcuts, in a corner of Grande Champagne where time seems to have slowed almost to a stop. |
About Daniel Bouju Cognac
Daniel Bouju is a small family firm founded in 1805 in Saint-Preuil, in the heart of Grande Champagne, the most prestigious of the Cognac region's crus, with just 25 hectares of its own vineyards. Production takes place in the original farmhouse's barn, where the cognac is distilled on a modest 16.5-hectolitre still and aged in new Limousin oak barrels with no added caramel or sugar of any kind, giving a dark, finesse-rich and characterful flavour. Collectors find the oldest stocks, which can stretch up to 80 years, a rare chance to taste craft untouched by industrial intervention, while newcomers meet a surprisingly affordable entry into authentic cognac.
History & Background
The Bouju family's recipe was written down in 1804 and still forms the basis of all production at the house, located in the small village of Saint-Preuil deep within Grande Champagne. Unlike the large cognac houses, the family has never expanded to industrial scale, instead maintaining a production process that runs largely as it did over 200 years ago, distilling on a single small still. That small scale has, paradoxically, made Daniel Bouju a favourite name among connoisseurs seeking cognac without the additives and mass production that characterise parts of the wider industry.
History & Background
The estate was founded by ancestors of the Allard and Chauvin families. In 1944, Emile Ardoin carried forward the fourth generation's winegrowing tradition, and in the sixth generation Daniel and Liliane Bouju continued the same principles. The family had distilled since the early 1800s, but only began selling cognac under its own name from the 1970s. Today the house is run by Francois Bouju.
Production & Style
The house farms 30 hectares of vineyards at the heart of Grande Champagne and maintains a method far removed from modern industrial production, rooted in respect for the family's old craft traditions.
Signature Style
Floral, Elegant, Full-Bodied
The flavour offers Grande Champagne's characteristic floral finesse combined with a rich, mature structure.
