A.D. Rattray was built on a name dating back to 1868, bought back by a man who sold his own family distillery to the Japanese and used the proceeds to chase his passion instead. Tim Morrison no longer needs to work — he does it because he loves a good cask.

    A. D. Rattray has traded in casks since 1868, and when Bunnahabhain's young Staoisha spirit lands with them, it arrives undiluted and without detours.

    Expert's Description

    Bunnahabhain Staoisha 2013/2019 A. D. Rattray 5 Years Old is a Single Islay Malt Whisky matured in a bourbon hogshead and bottled at cask strength, 60.1%.

    The whisky was distilled in October 2013 and bottled after just five years, giving a young and raw take on Staoisha – Bunnahabhain's peated spirit. A. D. Rattray drew it from cask #10537 and bottled it straight from the wood without chill filtration.

    The young age means the peat smoke stands right at the front of the glass, while the bourbon cask has only just begun to add a light sweetness on top.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

    Fresh peat smoke with a hint of citrus and freshly baked bread.

    Powerful smoke meets pepper and a young sweetness of vanilla custard.

About A.D. Rattray

A.D. Rattray is an independent Scottish whisky bottler whose roots trace back to Dewar Rattray, founded in 1868, which was relaunched in 2004 by Tim Morrison, a fourth-generation descendant of one of the founders. The firm is known for its "cask collection" representing the full regional spectrum of Scotland, often with a signature touch of smoke, and for building a solid cask stock from the twelve distilleries Morrison originally bought from in the early 1990s. Collectors are drawn especially to the older casks from that period, while newcomers meet a serious yet accessible entry into single-cask whisky.

History & Background

Tim Morrison, whose father Stanley P. Morrison bought the Bowmore distillery in 1963 for £117,000, was involved in 1989-1991 in anticipating that the family would soon sell Bowmore to Japanese giant Suntory, and he therefore spent the years leading up to the sale buying a large number of casks from twelve different distilleries. When the sale to Suntory went through in 1994, Morrison had secured a foundation of whisky casks he could build an entirely new business on. In 2004 he bought the firm Dewar Rattray, whose name his own great-great-grandfather Andrew Dewar had founded in 1868, and relaunched it as A.D. Rattray with those casks as its cornerstone.
