Mount Gay Rum

While most rum houses can only guess at their own age, Mount Gay can document theirs with an official paper dating to 1703. That makes the Barbados distillery the world's oldest rum brand with a proven founding date, a title no competitor has yet been able to challenge. More than three centuries later, the house still distills on the same island, with the same pride in being first.

About Mount Gay Rum

Mount Gay is the world's oldest documented rum brand, founded on Barbados and still one of the island's most respected producers.

History & Background

Mount Gay's history can be documented all the way back to 1703, officially making the distillery the world's oldest rum brand with a proven founding date, a rarity in an industry where most houses can only guess at their own age. Through the 18th and 19th centuries, the distillery grew into a central part of Barbados's economy and identity, driven by the island's rich sugarcane cultivation. The name Mount Gay comes from Sir John Gay Alleyne, an early leader of the distillery, whose efforts to refine production methods left a lasting mark on the house's style. Today Mount Gay remains one of Barbados's most respected producers and a constant reference point whenever the story of rum is told.
