Red berries, vanilla, a whiff of leather. Four years of tropical heat in Barbados, in casks that once held Rémy Martin Cognac. Still unmistakably Mount Gay, just with a French accent.
Expert Description
Mount Gay Cognac Cask Expression is a Barbados Rum aged for four years in ex-Cognac casks from Rémy Martin and bottled at 58%.
This is the eighth release in the Master Blender Collection, where Mount Gay's Master Blender Trudiann Branker picks a new angle on the house style each time. This time the question was simple: what happens when tropical ageing meets casks that have held Cognac? It is also the first time Mount Gay has matured a rum entirely in casks like these.
The rum is made from molasses and distilled in a column still. All four years of maturation took place in Barbados, in large-grain French oak casks from the Limousin forests. The oak is what brings the dried fruit, vanilla and a dry, woody edge.
It is bottled non-chill filtered, with no added colour and no added sugar, and only 6,276 bottles exist worldwide. It launched in May 2025, and Branker has hinted that it may mark the end of the Master Blender Collection as we know it.
Tasting Notes
Nose
Red berries and vanilla up front, then leather, with a little orange zest in the background.
Palate
Cherry and salted caramel, brown sugar and oak. The sweetness is clear, but the oak pulls it dry.
Finish
Long. Sweetness first, then the French oak closes it off dry.

Rémy Cointreau has been the majority owner of Mount Gay since 1989, and the same group stands behind the Cognac house Rémy Martin. The casks simply came from a sister company.
