Royal Lochnagar Whisky

Royal Lochnagar sits in the shadow of Balmoral Castle, the royal family's Scottish summer residence, and that's no coincidence. When Queen Victoria and Prince Albert visited the distillery in 1848, shortly after taking over Balmoral, they were so impressed that they granted it the right to bear the name 'Royal'. It remains one of Scotland's smallest distilleries, but one of the most royally connected.

About Royal Lochnagar

Royal Lochnagar sits on the grounds of the Balmoral estate in the Scottish Highlands and is one of the smallest distilleries in Diageo's portfolio. Following a visit by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1848, the distillery received a royal warrant, a title it still holds today.

History & Background

Queen Victoria and Prince Albert visited the distillery just one day after acquiring Balmoral Castle as their Scottish summer residence, and were so delighted by the visit that they granted the distillery the right to the name Royal. The distillery has since retained its small scale and traditional production methods, in sharp contrast to many of its industrially grown neighbours.

Production & Style

The distillery is one of Scotland's smallest, with only two pairs of stills, giving a very limited production and a full-bodied, sherry-toned distillate.

Signature Style

Full-Bodied, Nutty, Sherry-Toned
Dried nuts, sherry sweetness and a light smoky depth give a whisky that lives up to its royal status without being extravagant.
