Fortaleza Tequila

A family-owned tequila that still crushes its agave the traditional way - with stone, mule, and patience. A two-ton stone wheel still crushes the agave at Guillermo Sauza's distillery in the town of Tequila – exactly as his family has done it for generations.

    Expert Description

Fortaleza Blanco Tequila is a Mexican Blanco Tequila made from 100% agave, bottled at 40%.

Fortaleza is the work of Guillermo Erickson Sauza, a descendant of Don Cenobio Sauza, who founded Sauza Tequila in 1873. In 2005, Guillermo revived his family's old distillery in the town of Tequila, reintroducing traditional methods: the agave is cooked in brick ovens, crushed with a two-ton stone tahona wheel, and fermented naturally in wooden vats before double distillation in copper pot stills, with no additives. The Blanco is bottled straight after distillation, preserving its raw agave character without any barrel influence.

About Fortaleza

Fortaleza is a Mexican tequila from Los Camichines in Jalisco, produced by the Sauza family following a traditional recipe. For newcomers, it's an earthy, agave-forward introduction to real, handmade tequila; for collectors, one of the most respected names in modern tequila, where the old tahona method and the family's deep historical ties to the industry make every bottle a piece of living heritage.

History & Background

Fortaleza is produced by the Sauza family, one of the most historic lineages in the tequila industry, whose forefather Don Cenobio Sauza helped establish modern tequila production in the town of Tequila in the late 1800s. When the family sold the rights to the Sauza name to an international spirits company in 1976, great-great-grandson Guillermo Erickson Sauza instead chose to revive an old, traditional production method under the new name Fortaleza. The Los Camichines distillery still uses a tahona, a large stone wheel pulled by a mule or engine, to crush the agave the same way it was done over a hundred years ago. Fortaleza is today regarded as one of the most authentic and respected names among craft tequilas.

Production & Style

The agave plants are roasted in traditional brick ovens and then crushed with a tahona, a large stone wheel, before distillation in copper stills.

Signature Style

Earthy, Spiced, Full-Bodied
The tequila offers an earthy, spiced character with a full-bodied agave finish.
