  Hogshead Fine Old Blended Malt Scotch Whisky is one of those bottles that doesn’t reveal much on paper, yet still manages to spark curiosity. A blend with no age statement, no disclosed distilleries and no grand explanations – but with a charming little pig on the label, playing on the name while nodding to the classic hogshead cask of around 200 litres used throughout Scotland. The whisky is bottled at 43% and appears in the glass with a light amber colour that already hints at a gentle and approachable style.

  The aroma is far from the intense Islay smoke one might expect after hearing the rumours about its composition. Instead, you’re met with fresh oranges, a touch of pepper, soft smoke, mint and a light yeasty note that gives the nose a rounded and mellow character. The flavour follows the same path with sweet and friendly smoke that drifts into sherry sweetness, fruit candies and a subtle maritime breeze. The finish stays on the sweet side with notes of grapes, sweet Finnish liquorice and dark bread, before a hint of fruit acidity lingers as the final impression. It isn’t long, but it is pleasant and well balanced.

  Although the bottle is presented as a blend with a significant Islay component, the overall expression is far more accessible than many peat lovers might expect. The combination of smoke, sherry and what feels like a touch of Highland or Speyside malt creates a familiar and comforting profile without becoming dull.   Ardnamurchan malt and Campeltown malt. There is both a high malt content and many sherry casks. The name comes from the fact that there is a piece of isthmus near the coast called Maclean's Nose. In addition, the legendary Whiskey Writer and blender Charles McLean has been involved in the selection and pairing of the casks.
