Golsings Black Rum

Gosling's Black Seal is so tied to Bermuda that the island's signature cocktail, the Dark 'n Stormy, doesn't exist without it. The story begins in 1806, when a young Englishman was stranded on the island after 91 desperate days on a becalmed sea — and never continued his journey.

Without Goslings Black Seal, a Dark and Stormy would just be gin and lemonade under a different name, the rum is the actual cornerstone of Bermuda's signature cocktail.

    Expert description

Goslings Black Seal is a Bermuda Rum matured in previously used, charred American oak casks and bottled at 40%.

The rum comes from Gosling Brothers, a family-owned company founded in 1806 and still owned by the same family today. Black Seal is a blend of pot still and column still distillates, historically named after the black wax seal the family used to close bottles when the rum was sold loose from casks and poured into reused champagne bottles. Today, Black Seal is the cornerstone of the Dark and Stormy, the cocktail whose name Gosling Brothers has itself trademarked.

    Expert description

Goslings Gold is a Bermuda Rum matured around 5 years and bottled at 40%.

The rum comes from Gosling Brothers, the family-owned Bermuda company that has produced rum since 1806. The Gold expression is a blend of pot still and column still distillates, composed to be lighter and more elegant than the house's darker Black Seal, with a golden colour and a profile that places more weight on fruit and spice than heavy sweetness. The rum won gold at the International Rum Festival Awards in 2003.

About Golsings Black Rum

Gosling's Black Seal is Bermuda's signature rum, a dark blend of aged pot and column still distillates, matured in once-used, charred American oak barrels, all following a family recipe nearly 200 years old. The rum is a staple in Bermuda's fish chowder, lends its distinctive island flavour to the Bermuda Rum Swizzle, and is the very heart of the iconic Dark 'n Stormy cocktail. Collectors note the Gosling family's status as the only company still blending and bottling rum in Bermuda as a unique historical detail, while newcomers meet a rich, easy-drinking rum built as much for cocktails as for sipping neat.

History & Background

James Gosling left England in the spring of 1806 aboard the ship Mercury with £10,000 of merchandise bound for America, but after 91 days becalmed at sea his charter ran out and he put in at St. George's, Bermuda instead of continuing the journey. In 1857 his nephews renamed the firm Gosling Brothers, and three years later the first oak barrels of rum distillate arrived on the island, where a distinctive Bermuda rum was developed after much trial and sold from the barrel, until during the First World War it began to be bottled in reclaimed champagne bottles sealed with black wax. The name Black Seal arose when people began asking for "the black seal", and Gosling's remains today the only company blending and bottling rum on Bermuda, a family legacy spanning more than two centuries.

Production & Style

The rum is distilled from molasses and aged in heavily charred oak casks, giving it its deep color and character.
