Gosling's Black Seal is Bermuda's signature rum, a dark blend of aged pot and column still distillates, matured in once-used, charred American oak barrels, all following a family recipe nearly 200 years old. The rum is a staple in Bermuda's fish chowder, lends its distinctive island flavour to the Bermuda Rum Swizzle, and is the very heart of the iconic Dark 'n Stormy cocktail. History & Background

James Gosling left England in the spring of 1806 aboard the ship Mercury with £10,000 of merchandise bound for America, but after 91 days becalmed at sea his charter ran out and he put in at St. George's, Bermuda instead of continuing the journey. In 1857 his nephews renamed the firm Gosling Brothers, and three years later the first oak barrels of rum distillate arrived on the island, where a distinctive Bermuda rum was developed after much trial and sold from the barrel, until during the First World War it began to be bottled in reclaimed champagne bottles sealed with black wax. The name Black Seal arose when people began asking for "the black seal", and Gosling's remains today the only company blending and bottling rum on Bermuda, a family legacy spanning more than two centuries.

The rum is distilled from molasses and aged in heavily charred oak casks, giving it its deep color and character.
