G.D. Vajra

An Italian wine house in Piedmont making Barolo according to a philosophy of gentle, natural winemaking. The vineyards sit high on the Vergne hills near the town of Barolo itself, with views of the Alps, where the grapes ripen slowly to develop a fine, fruity character. G.D. Vajra was among the first in the region to go organic, long before it became fashionable in Piedmont's wine world.

G.D. Vajra was the first winery in the Barolo region to gain organic certification, as early as 1971 - a pioneering spirit that still defines the house's approach to winegrowing today.

    Expert's Description

G.D. Vajra Langhe Rosso 2022 is a Red Wine from Langhe, Piedmont, Italy, made from a blend of Albarossa, Barbera, Dolcetto, Freisa, Nebbiolo and Pinot Noir with an alcohol content of 13%. The winery dates back to 1972, when a young Aldo Vaira took over the family farm in Barolo, and the name G.D. Vajra comes from father Giuseppe Domenico's initials combined with the older spelling of the family name. The Langhe Rosso category gives the house's winemakers freedom to blend several of the region's classic grape varieties into one accessible, versatile cuvée that reflects the breadth of the Langhe district's grape material.

About G.D. Vajra

G.D. Vajra is an Italian wine house in the Barolo area of Piedmont, known for its gentle approach to winemaking and organic farming. The estate sits on one of the region's highest vineyard sites, close to the town of Barolo itself, where the cool altitude gives the grapes a slower ripening and a more refined fruitiness. For beginners, the house's wines offer an accessible way into classic Barolo, while connoisseurs appreciate that G.D. Vajra was a pioneer of organic farming in an area where conventional, technical winemaking long remained the norm.

History & Background

The estate was founded in 1972 and has since been run by the same family, with a strong focus on terroir over technical manipulation. G.D. Vajra was likely the first wine house in Piedmont to commit to organic viticulture, at a time when most of the region's producers relied on chemical aids and high yields. The site on the Vergne hills, with views of the Alps, was deliberately chosen for its cool altitude, which gives the grapes a slower, gentler ripening. This combination of early organic conviction and a unique location has earned the house a reputation as one of the most respected, lesser-known names in Barolo.

Production & Style

The wines are made mainly from Nebbiolo grapes grown on the Vergne hills, with long macerations and ageing in large, old oak casks.

Signature Style

Elegant, Tannic, Complex
The flavour is elegant and complex, with fine tannins typical of classic Barolo.
