About Van Volxem Wine

Van Volxem is one of the Saar region's most prestigious wineries, known for its dry, terroir-driven Rieslings from some of Germany's most historic slate vineyards. The estate has revived the Saar's standing as one of Germany's finest Riesling regions.

History & Background

The vineyards were planted and cultivated by the Romans as early as the 3rd century, as part of a Roman villa complex. In the 11th century, monks rediscovered the estate, cultivated it, and founded the monastery cellar in 1743. After the French Revolution, the church property was secularised and became the property of Gustav von Volxem, a brewing heir from Brussels, who founded the winery under his own name. The estate remained in the family for four generations before being taken over in 2000 by entrepreneur and Bitburger heir Roman Niewodniczanski, after a period of financial difficulty.

Production & Style

Van Volxem still vinifies mainly dry wines and uses grapes from vines at least 30 years old, grown on the Saar region's fine slate soils. In the late 1800s, Saar wines achieved top prices at the important Trier auctions, often higher than prices from the Mosel itself.

Signature Style

Dry, Mineral, Aromatic
The taste offers mirabelle plum, elderflower and white peach, carried by the characteristic minerality of the Saar region's slate soil.

Did you know?

Although the Saar makes up only around 10% of the entire Mosel region, nearly half of the "best Mosel wines" sold at auction in Trier in the late 1800s came from Saar estates.
