Brasilberg Bitter

A Danish take on the German classic Underberg, only with Brazilian flair in the name. Brasilberg blends liquorice, cloves and orange peel into a dark, full-bodied bitter, created specifically for Denmark's bartenders.

  • Dark bottle of Brasilberg bitter, one litre
    Item no.: 22227865479-321

In the 1930s a young man from Rheinberg travelled to Rio de Janeiro and found an entirely new world of herbs and plants, which would give the family recipe a Brazilian sister.

    Expert description

Brasilberg is a Brazilian bitter at 42% ABV, originally created by Dr. Paul Underberg, who settled in Rio de Janeiro and developed his own version of the family’s herbal bitter using local Amazonian ingredients after German herb supplies grew scarce during the Second World War. After a years-long family dispute over the name, the Brazilian branch was renamed Brasilberg in 2005, separate from the German Underberg but still built on the same heritage. This 1 litre bottle is made for bartenders and cocktail enthusiasts, with a dark colour and a full-bodied flavour of liquorice, cloves and orange peel, much like the German original.

About Brasilberg Bitter

Brasilberg Bitter is a Danish bitter, brewed to a classic recipe of herbs and spices. For newcomers it's a dark, full-bodied bitter perfect for mixing into cocktails; for collectors it's notable that Brasilberg was developed as a Danish interpretation of the German classic Underberg, sharing the same liquorice, clove and orange peel notes, but tailored for Denmark's bartending scene and its signature 42% ABV.

History & Background

Brasilberg Bitter is a Danish herbal bitter that - as the name suggests - draws on South American flavor traditions combined with Nordic bitters craftsmanship. The category of 'exotically spiced' Danish bitters grew as travel experiences and foreign flavor impressions began to shape the Danish spirits market from the mid-20th century onward. The bitter is meant as an alternative to the more classic, herb-heavy Danish bitters.

Production & Style

The bitter is infused with a blend of herbs and spices that give it its characteristic flavor.

Signature Style

Bitter, Spicy, Full-Bodied
The flavor offers a full-bodied bitterness with spicy undertones.
