Ch. de L'Auche Champagne

A small champagne house that grows and bottles everything itself in the French village it's named after. Ch. de L'Auche holds on to the old-fashioned idea that the best champagne comes from those who still have soil under their nails. There are no large volumes here - only patience, chalk soil and méthode champenoise carried out on a small scale.

In the village of Janvry, half an hour's drive west of Reims, 60 growers work together to farm the grapes that become Ch. de l'Auche. It's not a single château with one plot, but a cooperative - and this rosé is one of the house's best-known styles.

    Expert's Description

Ch. de l'Auche Rosé Brut is a Sparkling Wine from Champagne, France made from 75% Pinot Meunier and 25% Pinot Noir, bottled at 12.5% ABV.

Château de l'Auche farms 115 hectares across 40 plots around Janvry, several of which are classified Premier Cru. For this rosé, a portion of the Pinot Noir is vinified as red wine and blended into the cuvée - the classic assemblage method. After the second fermentation in bottle, the wine rests on its lees for 2.5 years, and following disgorgement it rests a further 6 months before release.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Strawberry and cherry, alongside a biscuity aroma that after a few minutes in the glass recalls the pink biscuits of Reims.

    Palate

Round and harmonious, with concentrated red fruit supported by good structure and an energetic mousse.

    Finish

The fruit lingers long, soft and well rounded.

    Serving & Food Pairing

Serve at 8-10°C in a champagne glass or tulip. The rosé pairs well with light starters, shellfish and strawberries for dessert - or enjoy it as an aperitif.

The same cooperative in Janvry, west of Reims, is behind this Sélection - but the mood here differs from the rosé. Golden in the glass, with a fine, persistent stream of bubbles and a maturity that comes from years spent in the cellar.

    Expert's Description

Ch. de l'Auche Sélection Brut is a Sparkling Wine from Champagne, France made from 85% Pinot Meunier and 15% Pinot Noir, bottled at 12% ABV.

The cuvée is built on around 60% of the current vintage, supplemented with reserve wines from the previous three years, all given time to mature in the house's cellars. That gives a Champagne with immediate freshness from the youngest wines and depth and complexity from the older ones - two layers meeting in the same glass. The dosage sits at the fuller end of the Brut category, giving a round, generous style.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Open and aromatic, with generous, juicy aromas of pear and apricot.

    Palate

Full and pleasant at first, before the Champagne takes on a broader, rounder dimension - big vinosity, yet still light on the tongue.

    Finish

Complex, with an interplay between young, fresh tones and the more mature nuances from the reserve wines.

    Serving & Food Pairing

Serve at 8-10°C in a champagne glass or tulip. Sélection Brut works well as an aperitif, but also has enough body to accompany a main course of white meat or fish in sauce.

  • Magnum bottle of Champagne from Château de l'Auche with golden label
    Item no.: 059763-615-256-2

The same Sélection as the house's 75 cl bottle - but in magnum format, where the Champagne matures more slowly and gently. The larger volume relative to the cork means less oxygen exposure over time, and many find the wine simply stays fresher for longer at this size.

    Expert's Description

Ch. de l'Auche Sélection Brut Magnum is a Sparkling Wine from Champagne, France made from 85% Pinot Meunier and 15% Pinot Noir, bottled at 12% ABV.

The cuvée is the same as the standard bottle - around 60% of the current vintage supplemented with reserve wines from previous years - but in magnum the Champagne matures more slowly in the cellar. That often results in an even more rounded, integrated wine once it's finally disgorged. The magnum format is also a natural choice when several guests are sharing a bottle at the table.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Open and aromatic, with generous aromas of pear and apricot.

    Palate

Full and round, with a dimension that feels a touch more integrated than in the standard bottle.

    Finish

Complex and long, with an interplay of fresh and mature tones.

    Serving & Food Pairing

Serve at 8-10°C in champagne glasses. The magnum is a natural choice for parties and celebrations where the Champagne is shared - serve it as an aperitif or with a main course of white meat or fish in sauce.

    Did You Know?

Champagne generally matures more slowly in magnum than in a standard bottle, because the ratio of the air pocket under the cork to the volume of wine is smaller - something many collectors and sommeliers prefer.

About Ch. de L'Auche Champagne

Ch. de L'Auche is a small, independent champagne house that grows its own grapes and controls the entire process through to the finished bottle. For someone new to champagne, it's a good introduction to the idea of 'grower champagne' - where the house isn't a large, anonymous producer but a family or individual with their own vineyards. For the collector, it's precisely these small independent houses in Champagne that have been taking market share from the big-name brands in recent years, often offering more personality and terroir expression at a lower price.

History & Background

Ch. de L'Auche belongs to the long tradition of 'récoltant-manipulant' in Champagne, where the grower harvests, presses and bottles the wine themselves, unlike the large champagne houses that buy in grapes from hundreds of suppliers. This model has existed for generations on the region's family-run plots, but has gained real international attention over the last 20-30 years as consumers have grown curious about authenticity and smaller producers. The house sticks to this approach, letting each vintage reflect that year's weather and grape quality rather than smoothing out the differences with large reserves.

Production & Style

The champagne is made using the méthode champenoise from the grape varieties Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier from the house's own vineyards.
