Quinta De Ventozelo

When the Douro Valley became one of the world's very first officially demarcated wine regions in 1757, Quinta de Ventozelo was given registration number 1 on the list. It's a position the estate still carries with pride in every bottle of port it sends out from its slate terraces.

Quinta de Ventozelo LBV 2014 Late Bottled Vintage Portugal Port Wine 75 cl 20%

Quinta de Ventozelo LBV 2014 is a classic Late Bottled Vintage Port from the Douro Valley, made from traditional red grape varieties such as Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinto Cão and Sousão. The 2014 vintage was marked by a cool and clean climate with a humid winter and spring, which led to early ripening. September became the rainiest in more than 80 years, resulting in significant quality differences between vineyards harvested before and after the rainfall.

The grapes come from extreme vineyards trained with double cordon and spur pruning. Harvest took place at the end of September, where the grapes were handpicked and carefully selected in the field. After arriving at the winery, they were destemmed and underwent an intense 48‑hour maceration to extract colour, aroma and structure. This was followed by temperature‑controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks, which was stopped at the optimal moment by adding grape spirit. The wine was then aged for four years in large vats to preserve freshness and prevent oxidation.

The result is an elegant and expressive LBV with aromas of blackberry and spice. The palate offers dark fruit wrapped in a full and soft texture, finishing fresh and long. A harmonious Port that reflects both the character of the vintage and the unique Ventozelo terroir.

About Quinta de Ventozelo

Quinta de Ventozelo is one of the historically most significant estates in the Douro Valley, holding registration number 1 in the official Douro register from 1757. The estate stretches along the river with views over some of the valley's most striking terraces.

History & Background

The estate can be traced back to the 13th century, but it was in 1757, when the Douro region's famous classification system was created, that Ventozelo was entered as number one on the list of the region's vineyards. In 2012 the estate was taken over and thoroughly renovated by a group of Portuguese investors, who rebuilt both vineyards and production with respect for the site's history. Today it produces both port and still Douro wines from the same schist terraces.

Production & Style

The grapes grow on steep schist terraces along the Douro river and are still partly hand-harvested. After fermentation the wine is fortified with grape spirit, and maturation takes place in oak casks in the estate's own cellars.

Signature Style

Expect dark berries, a touch of schist minerality, and a warm, powerful sweetness underneath.
