Quinta de Ventozelo LBV 2014 Late Bottled Vintage Portugal Port Wine 75 cl 20%

Quinta de Ventozelo LBV 2014 is a classic Late Bottled Vintage Port from the Douro Valley, made from traditional red grape varieties such as Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinto Cão and Sousão. The 2014 vintage was marked by a cool and clean climate with a humid winter and spring, which led to early ripening. September became the rainiest in more than 80 years, resulting in significant quality differences between vineyards harvested before and after the rainfall.

The grapes come from extreme vineyards trained with double cordon and spur pruning. Harvest took place at the end of September, where the grapes were handpicked and carefully selected in the field. After arriving at the winery, they were destemmed and underwent an intense 48‑hour maceration to extract colour, aroma and structure. This was followed by temperature‑controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks, which was stopped at the optimal moment by adding grape spirit. The wine was then aged for four years in large vats to preserve freshness and prevent oxidation.

The result is an elegant and expressive LBV with aromas of blackberry and spice. The palate offers dark fruit wrapped in a full and soft texture, finishing fresh and long. A harmonious Port that reflects both the character of the vintage and the unique Ventozelo terroir.

Info about LBV - Late Bottled Vintage Late Bottled Vintage differs from Vintage Port in two ways. Firstly, it is produced in both declared and undeclared vintages, and secondly, it undergoes 4-6 years of maturation in oak barrels before bottling. This makes for a more open and approachable Port, and unlike Vintage Port, it doesn't need further aging to show its full potential. With Late Bottled Vintage Port, you can usually see the vintage of the Port wine on the bottle. It is aged in barrel and bottled 4 to 6 years after the grape is picked and in almost all cases can be drunk immediately after purchase - maybe even with your purchase if you wish. ;) That is, it is very easy to use, because its birthday is written on the bottle and you can open the port wine immediately. Feel free to empty the bottle, because the shelf life is estimated at a good week. Late Bottled Vintage goes through a different process than vintage port wines and is therefore ready to drink faster, although the taste is a bit more "raw".

Late Bottled Vintage can be filtered, which means, among other things, that it has been in the barrel for a longer time (around 6 years, which makes the name "Late Bottled" title incredibly appropriate), whereas the unfiltered and more traditional Late Bottled Vintage port wine develops further in the bottle. However, it is also ready to drink when purchased, but the sediment means that it can easily improve with perhaps another 10-20 years. When buying Late Bottled Vintage Port, it is good to know whether the producer filters or not and thus whether you can leave the bottle in the bottle. It is the unfiltered versions that continue to evolve and thus potentially become fantastic. A Late Bottled Vintage Port may have been intended to be a Vintage Port, but if it has not had time to develop sufficiently before the latest date for approval for Vintage Port, it can be stored longer and become a Late Bottled Vintage Port. In other words, there are many great Late Bottled Vintage Ports! In short, an unfiltered Late Bottled Vintage is like a small lottery ticket - it's just a lot easier to win.
